Help! Identify this GMC part...

What is this part? Maybe a steering wheel center cap? Maybe from the 50's, because of the GMC logo. Please Help me solve the mystery. Thanks Lou W.

Re: Help! Identify this GMC part...

It's a filler that goes in the right half of the gauge cluster, but I don't know what would go there in a more highly optioned truck. My '55 2nd has an identical one.

Re: Help! Identify this GMC part...

I agree, it sits in the dash as a filler on the right hand side if you don't have a tach or clock.

Re: Help! Identify this GMC part...

Here is the dash in my 59 GMC. That piece would go were I have the factory tach.

Your piece also has chrome bezels, which were an option, and mine have white bezels.

They were not common. It is a Sun Tach and they built them for GMC with the same light green script that is used on the other gauges. There is a box that mounts under the dash that controls it. The box is different for 6 and 8 cylinder.

To tell you the truth it looks cool, but they don't work the best. I have asked around about this and was told they didn't work well when new and I probably should not expect more now. And the have a 1.35 volt mercury battery in them.

www.williamsons.com will make the old guts out and make them modern. I haven't done this yet, but might.

I bought this one on eBay.

Here is a picture with the box that mounts on the firewall under the dash.

Caution on asking for value without being a subscriber. Rules indicate you need to pay your $25 annual fee to ask what it is worth and there is a special section for that.

With that said, the only value you have is in the chrome bezel. If the chrome is really nice it might be worth $20, poor chrome and less than $5.
