My 68 with a 454 takes 5-1/2 and my 79 tow truck takes 7. Are you sure the stick matches the tube?

What do you mean by 'big pan', does it have an excessively large sump?

I changed my oil yesterday. I didn't know how many it needed so I started with 5 quarts. I drove it for a few minutes and checked it again when I got back. It read low so I added another quart. After reading this thread I'm gonna triple check it again in the morning to make sure I have the right amount...

Steve, Moroso makes a 7, 8 and 9 qt pan.
The 7 is 9" deep
The 8 is 9.75" deep
The 9 is 10.75" deep.

This may help.

The stock pan on my 89 454 takes 7 quarts, that is with an oil cooler.

I have one like that. I was told that its from a grain truck. I really don't know though. I think it took 9 quarts to get to full. I had a stock dipstick.
