Crossmember Questions

Are there supposed to be exhaust cutouts on the crossmember?
I haven't had time to mess with my truck for awhile, so today I was poking around underneath it and noticed this:

I'm not sure why I never noticed before. Is this a bad thing? A good thing?

Thanks

Most likely won't hurt anything. If it were me, I would try to cut a "round" area big enough to accomodate the pipe without it rattling against the X-Member and weld a circular reinforcement around the hole I cut out. The welded part is most likely overkill....but thats just the way I am. A good round hole in that area won't detract much from its strenght....just stay away from the bends at the top and bottom of the X-Member.

The only thing I cringe about is that the brake and fuel lines will be running right next to the exhaust pipe in that area...
