Is LMC completely crazy?

Have any of you ever seen the note on LMC's replacement hood page? WTF?

http://www.lmctruck.com/icatalog/cb/0023.asp

Note in upper right.

Yea, I wanna spend 400 bucks and shipping only to expect to have to do some body work on 'em when they come in.

Even Goodmark has that caveat. It's called CYA.

Re: Is LMC completely crazy?

You can do that same small amount of bodywork on you own hood and be $$$$$ ahead! Typical disclaimer for slightly damaged sheet metal that comes from Asia! To be perfectly honest...in some cases you have little choice if your parts are rusted beyond repair. I have never had a problem finding a perfectly good, ORIGINAL, hood for under $100!

Re: Is LMC completely crazy?

You can drive to a local distributor and inspect the parts before buying. I drove 2 hours to Lawerenceville, GA to pick my body panels up in person. They let me inspect them before buying.

Re: Is LMC completely crazy?

So why is all the replacement sheet metal made over seas anyway? The body panels and stuff was made right here in the USA when the truck were built right? So why now is it all Asian metal? Sorry if this is a thread jack. I just figured this was a good spot for it.

For the same reason that just about everything you look at is made in Mexico, Japan, China, and Korea; $$$

Re: Is LMC completely crazy?

Yea, it's sad. I recently bought some stuff and not only was it made in China, but it said Made In China in Spanish only.

I was reading through a Performance book when I rebuilt my original 283 for my '67 LWB and it opened with something like this in the Exhaust section...

"The throaty sound the rumbles from under the hood portrays the beast that lies beneath and the power of the nation that built it." Can't remember the exact words but it still brings a tear to my eye.

Where are we headed?

Before I answer let me just say that my dad belonged to the United Auto Worker's Union (UAW) for 42 years.

The reason stuff is made overseas is because the UAW people here want $40/hour, 13 vacation days/year, 5 weeks vacation/year, full medical, and full medical after retirement.

Guys overseas are glad to have the work.

I'm not saying this is right or wrong, it is just the way it is.

Re: Is LMC completely crazy?

Must be a different U.A.W.than I belong to...25$/hr. 2weeks vacation and 5 personal days/year...check out the bonuses and perks that the upper management makes for G.M. and then you'll know why they try to outsource all the work they can to cheap labor markets.everyone will complain about a union worker making 75k a year but a ceo can make millions while his company loses money and nobody cares.when all these manufacturing jobs go overseas belive me,it WILL at sometime effect you and your family

Re: Is LMC completely crazy?

^Because, that's where we've decided to send our steel industry, and that's where we ship all of our scrap metal to All because it's a few $$ cheaper (and the overall quality isn't as good) When I was taking my Civil classes a few years ago, a professor I had showed us some buildings that failed during construction because the steel I beams from China did not have the same design strengths and qualities that were used in the ASI design manual that we have come to expect from the former US steel industry.

Which is why it is important to inspect the quality of the components before purchasing and installing them. Don't blame the fabricator, blame the inspector that accepted the defective product and installed it.

It's hard to visually inspect the tensile strength of steel

If I'm buying metal for my truck, I'll look at it first. If I'm building a highrise, I'd be doing a lot more than looking at the steel.

Besides, I just beat the hell out of my panels and I luckily haven't had to replace any.....I still got a used front fender sitting around (for about 20 years) that I thought I would have to use but didn't.

Wrong. We make good wages but it's not even close to $40 an hour and we only get 4 weeks vacation and 10 sick days only after you have worked there over 20 years. The insurance is ok but sure isn't what it used to be.

then you will not be owning a classic vehicle because as I have learned relearned and learned again a replacement part is something to work with when a used part in good shape can not be found ,
you have to beat grind sand weld cut and use any other mean's to get this repalcement stuff to fit and fix the damage it got from ups and fedex ,,,,,

Re: Is LMC completely crazy?

I believe most everything I have bought from bedsides to fenders needed some sort of body work done to them. It's just the way it is. I'm sure some body men will come in here and comfirm this.

Tri Plus parts are 19 guage and the better of all the overseas parts. All will need work and if you don't think they didn't have to tweak them and use filler on the line. Although the parts overall were better originally, that doesn't mean they were perfect either. I have had to rework NOS parts to fit right as well.

Ahh...
19 ga steel is what your truck is made out of!!!
Many car manufactors back into the 30's used 19ga to build their exterior panels.

Ive recieved MANY brand new OEM parts that needed work. Chevy trucks are the WORSEST. The first thing you do to a fender is ream out the mounting holes. Sent back many brand new doors because of the holes for the hinge plate was in the wrong location. And this is on brand new trucks!!!

As for parts being made in china just like every other american company, its all about money. Go ask the people that worked for huffy bicycles, koduk film, dell computers and many others...Eric

Yep, we all know about that. I make a strong effort to see where the product is made & always try not to buy stuff made in China. Ive been shopping for a new gas grill for monthes, cant find one that isnt made in China.
