Old gas smell...

Hi all,

I had my rusted old parts cab hauled off this morning and when the scrapper loaded it he flipped it on the driver side and dumped a bunch of old lacquer smelling gas all over my driveway. The fumes are godawful! I dumped a bunch of the kitty litter looking stuff out to soak it up, but it did nothing for the fumes..... Any suggestions before my wife chokes me?

Home depot has a drive way cleaner they sell in the building materials department that hooks to your garden hose and cleans pretty good. You just spray it on and scrub it in with a push broom. (spread some dawn on the concrete too and scrub it in). Its hard to get the smell out of concrete because it soaks some of it up but it helps.Had the same problem with an old gas tank I took out in the garage and it leaked everywhere.

Cool, I'll be driving right by a Home Depot tomorrow and can pick some up. I did dump some Mr. Clean / Febreze cleaner on it and hosed it down some and that has made it a little more tolerable. I'll give it a good cleaning this weekend.

This is a really good string actually.....the only thing that saved me working on my fuel line in my garage was all the cardboard I put under the truck. Dad taught me that one.

x2 on the driveway cleaner. Zep citrus degreaser, which can also be had at HD, works well too.

And x2 on cardboard. Save those big boxes.

Liquid clothes detergent. From what I hear you can just put it on and wait for the rain to wash it away. I've never tried it myself.

Soak it with the cleaners mentioned above and use pressure sprayer to get into the deeper part of the concrete. You can rent one at Lowes or other rental places if you don't have one. Either electric or gas.

Driveway?!? Thats nothing.
Working my way through college I worked at an independent garage. A customer had a 1938 Packard he picked up and wanted us to do various stuff on it. I got the job of draining the gas tank.
Tanks then had drain plugs. I ran it up on a hoist, wheeled over the oil catch pan/drum device, and carefully removed the drain plug. I guess I wasn't careful enough. I had ONE DROP land on my lip.

I've been through many different situations in my life time. Watched a little brother get hit by a car (he's fine), watched another little brother take a nose dive off a 25 foot high climbing structure BEFORE the sand was dumped in for safety and to make it a couple fee lower (he's fine too), watched the nose diver little brother go through the front glass storm door on the house (he's still fine), worked in a butcher shop, cleaned uncountable numbers of fish, gutted deer, moose, elk, given first aid I wouldn't want to describe. I've never gagged in my life. Except when that one droplet of sour gasoline hit the outside of my lip.

I feel for you and your bride. I hope you get it cleaned up.

Is it a concrete driveway? Perhaps that acid they use to etch concrete driveways before you paint them will work?

HA! Good 'ol ZEP...former ZEP salesman here. Too bad the company shafted us reps by going retail. Their stuff is more expensive but most of it works wonders!

Whenever I smell MVP (waterless hand soap) it makes me smile because whenever I demo'ed that one, I sold it, each and every time! I was the only one in my area that really pushed it which was odd, it was more expensive than the other hand cleaners (bigger commission) and it worked 100% better.

^^ the Zep citrus is great for soaking & cleaning engine parts. Works better than the purple in my opinion, especially when hot. An old 8 quart crock pot is what I use. Makes my shop smell like oranges.

If you apply anything to your gas and after application, you still smell gas or the "stink" you mention, do not use a broom. Brooms create static electricity and they can ignite vapors very easily. If you must use a broom, dunk the bristle in water before doing so. Shake some excess water off the broom and then use.

Seen it happen once and let me tell you, it was a pretty incredible flash.

Fresh gas and a match

Muriatic acid. Use a little bit with water and a stiff broom. Just don't let the neighbors see you do it.
