NV4500 experts, snap ring

I don't have the original snapring that holds fifth gear on the shaft. My ring grouve measures roughly .055. The local trans shop gave me a ring that is .090 and that is too thick. I got one from the old time auto store and it measures .050. So is this sufficent to hold 5th gear? Is that GM snapring a special part no.? 93 GMC 3500 series with dual rear wheels.
