72 custom door pannels

so i was going to tackle the task of making custom door panels for my 72, from what i understand the door and window regulator are longer and stick out more. the plan is to get some particle board( not completely set on that yet) and have a buddy of mine do some old school tattoo flash on it and such, but to make up for the longer regulators i was thinking of making some wooden washers and mounting them to take up the extra space. anyone have experience in doing this or something like it? any info would be great!

I had a buddy who did so, we went to tractor supply and used nylon washer/spacers

You could change the regulator and latch control to the earlier models. They are shorter and would eliminate the spacer. Might look even better. When mine comes back from paint that is what I plan to do. Also I would use Luan 3/16 or 1/4 inch. It will hold up better.
