I just picked up a '72 C20 w/8' stepside bed. How rare are they? I have only seen a few in my life. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

not rare but not oftenly found either. probably cuz they were not favoured among most people

Iam not sure how rare they are. I have a 67 C10 long stepside.

Usually the 8 foot bed went on a Model 20 or 30 [3/4 ton or 1 ton]. I guess you could order an 8' Model 10, but that would be rare.

7538 1/2 ton 127 inch wheel base stepsides were made in 72.

only 3973 2 wheel rive 3/4 ton stepsides were built, and they never made a 127 inch wheel base one ton, nor one with an 8 foot bed... however, there were 1542 one tons made with a 9 foot stepside bed on them.

So, it's the 1/2 ton verson is considerably more common, and 7538 made... isn't all that rare.

My '69 K20 had one..it was originally a K10 though,it just has 3/4 ton running gear now..Most of the 8' stepsides I see are on 3/4 tons,and mostly on 4wds.I do see some on 2wds though..Rare,no.Unusual now-yes.Mine was rusted to nothing and replaced with a fleetside bed..If it hadn't be changed for rust reasons,someone would have changed it for the appearance..Plus when you damage a bed and need parts or it's rusty,it's alot easier to find a fleetside longbed than a stepside longbed to use.Alot don't like the looks of longstep beds...They aren't my favorite but can be tolerated..

It's not a C10, it's a C20. I have actually only seen a handful of these. Just kinda neat that its different.

I wonder about a truck I saw a few years back.It was a`68 factory K/20 2ith a 9' bed.It was a fire dept truck with original paint.I never checked the front axle that close,but I think it was a Dana44 that would be original.I`m wondering if a 133 3/4t was available.Maybe as a cab`n`chassis?This truck had the 19" split rims.I wonder if it was a C/30 Napco conversion.But,I`m pretty sure it had a factory axle and "20"-series badges.It`s one of those foggy memories that I wish I had looked closer at of taken pictures.

I had 3 cool 8' Stepsides.They were`69 C/20s.One had 396/4spd/air and a Dana 60 leaf rear.Just alot of HD options.Another Was a loaded CST 396/TH400/air...Nice and loaded.The last was unique because it was a 250/Powerglide with two options and "Special Paint".It was light grey original paint,about the color of primer.Not Navy grey.All 5 16.5 wheels were red from the factory.With an original bisa tire was removed from the rim there were factory chaulk markings on the wheel.It never had door lettering although it must have been a fleet (or company) vehicle.

Not common --had a nice set of perfect bedsides a few years back and couldn't give them away!! they are kind of popular with the Harley set for transporting bike's!! A big hog fits in there better then in a fleetside.

Hey Andy, Don't feel like a tool. BTW where do you get all your INFO? You and a few others on here are pretty dern smart! So saying that............

This truck has an Eaton rear axle and coil springs. The engine is a 292 with a 4spd. Has power disc brakes and manual steering.No AIR. I noticed yesterday that the wheel studs on the front dont match the rear. The rear axle has smaller dia. studs. Can these be replaced with the larger ones? Thanks

I actually passed a green one today on HWY 123 with a couch in the bed. I think it was a '69, I only had about a 3 second glance at the grill. I know where there is one in a junkyard, but it's already been picked clean and the bed is pretty rotten.

if the studs on the back are smaller, than the rear has been swapped out, or the hubs were. someone probably swapped the whole rear.
Lookin at my books, 72 states that coil springs got you a 'chevrolet 5200' rear (raton/corp rear) and a 292 with a 4 speed got you a 4.57 gearset unless optioned otherwise. So they probably found a 4.10 gear axla and slipped it in.
Interesting, the 72 book from GM (the restoration cat) states that a leaf sping truck automaticly got a DANA rear. I've never heard that one before.
As for my info... I have about a dozen books here, and lotsa reading on these forums.

LawMan02: How many inches up on the A Pillar from the cowl line is the center hole for the Unity spotlight? I have all the pieces, including the A pillar bracket, and want to put a cop spot on my '71 Jimmy. BTW, nice looking stepside. I like stepsides because you can mount Jerry cans on the steps.
