Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

Has anyone sandblasted their truck? How did it turn out and roughly what was the cost? Thanks.

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

Here is a picture of the last cab that I had sandblasted. It turned out well and the cost was $150 to do an all over sand blast.

Whoever does the sand blasting has to know what they are doing or the panels can be warped.

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

yup,
i just had my whole truck blasted. but not with sand, it was ground corn cobs. the texture it leaves behind is the same as sand blasting but the guy doing the blasting can get a little more agressive. the truck was totally disasemble so the guy had to do each piece separately. it cost me $600.
the only thing i can tell that it really did for me was save some time sanding and revealed some rust that i didn't know i had. i really can't say if it was worth it or not.

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

I have had the last few trucks/cars i have done soda blasted..Stuff is just like baking soda... The guy has a trailer with the equipment on it and comes to you... He blasts it in your yard or driveway then you hose away the left over material or when it rains it disappears.. charges about a grand to do an entire car..

Who did your sandblasting for you? My dad was looking for someone to do some parts for him.

I will get the name and telephone number for you. The guy's business is just north of Grand Haven. There is another guy that does good work in Dorr, MI if that would be closer for you.

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

Another board member from the St Louis area, his name left me, had his truck quoted at around $700.

I talked with my body shop and for my bed (sides, floor, front panel, fender wells and tailgate) was quoted at around $400. You need to make sure the body shop knows what they are doing, because they can really mess up a rust free panel fast. If they use sand, it has the tendency to warp as heat builds up while blasting, where as soda, corn, plastic,...., tend to keep the heat down, thus less if any warpage.

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

wow, all those prices are cheaper than I have been told. My prices were $90/hr and 4-5 hours for the cab.

I had my frame blasted and it would have been about $450 for it and the axles and springs.

I also called about acid dipping, $575 for the cab and $110 or so for each other panel! It takes all seam sealer, rust and paint off though.

I would do the blasting if you can afford it.

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

If I could afford the dip, I would definitely do that on a cab, especially since mine is rust above the windshield. Just in case...

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

In Little Rock, AR., I took my front fenders, hood, cowl, and my entire bed to be soda-blasted. All came out looking like virgin sheet metal....no bondo, no dents, no rust. $320, with the tax. Although it was faintly viewable, I could see that there were markings from the rolling mill on the front of the bed, before the metal was formed into a bed front.

The soda leaves a surface that preserves it until the bodywork can begin, too. It's been two months since I picked up my parts (stored in the dry) and no surface rust has appeared, either. Yeah, it rains here, too.

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

ChevLoRay... thanks for the post! I've heard that soda will leave a residue, but didn't know it would last that long. And that is a heck of a price, because for only my bed it will be $400 or less.

Re: Sandblasting 72 GMC $?

I left a car sit for almost a year after it was blasted and it never rusted.. Its amazing stuff!! My soda blaster told me to wash the car with soap and water before starting bodywork...

I've heard the same thing... I was saving up money for them to blast, and work on the body, but if soda works this well, then I can have them blasted and then save for the body work.
