Dome light staying on

This afternoon, I pulled my gauge cluster to clean up and install a new bezel. Didn't run into any problems at all. In fact, I was surprised how easy it was to take out, take apart, put back together and put back in.

This evening the Mrs. and I went out for a bite to eat and when I got home I noticed the dome light was on. I figured I just needed to turn the knob, but that didn't help. The dome light stayed on no matter what. I pulled the bulb -- burned my finger in the process -- for the night, but not sure what happened.

Any ideas?

Re: Dome light staying on

Sounds like either a wire got hooked up wrong, or something shorted out.

Did you disconnect any wires when you pulled the bezel?

Re: Dome light staying on

To remove the gauge cluster, you have to disconnect the speedometer, the oil pressure gauge and one plug that handles the electrical.

The headlight switch is not removed. It stays in the dash.

Check the door jam plungers and make sure they are functioning correctley. I've had to spray mine with W/D 40 every now and then.

Get out and drive the truck this summer and have some fun!
It sucks not being able to hear!

LWB trucks rule, if you don't think so measure your SWB!
After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

Re: Dome light staying on

Had this happen to me. The dome light would stay on sometimes or come on and off while I was driving. Turned out the wire that goes to the button on the door jam was grounding out. I would start there and work your way back. Maybe one of the wires pulled back or grounded out when you were working on it. Good luck! Let us know what you find.

Re: Dome light staying on

The dome light has constant power going to it and the ground is the switch side, sounds like the ground wire is touching the body some were. Under the door seal is common place were wires get pinched. Put the bulb back in and trace the ground wire from light back to switch.

That's what I love about this board. Seems like every time something comes up on my truck, I look here and it has just happened to someone else

I never had a bulb in the dome light in my '68, then the other day I was looking through some old parts boxes and found one. I put it in and it came on and wouldn't go off. I don't have door plungers, and the light switch did nothing to turn it off, so I pulled it back out-burning my fingers in the process-and threw it back into the parts box. But now I see I'm not alone, and have a good idea on how to fix it.

Now if I can just remember what box I threw that bulb into...

Re: Dome light staying on

Well, it's working.

Went out this morning to start looking and everything was working as it should. I've narrowed it down to two things:

1.) Spooks

2.) After listening to the 10-week-old grandson scream all the way home from the restaurant, my brain was fried and I didn't realize even when you turn it off with the switch, the light stays on when the door is open!

Hehe, yep that'll do it. I was going to ask if you had the knob out when you were cleaning up the dash and forgot to turn it back off after reinsertion. Glad you figured it out.
