lokar shifter cable or linkage?
I need to buy a Lokar shifter for my 52. I want to keep the bench seat. What I need to know is if I need to buy the cable type shifter of the linkage type? I was thinking I would get the 32" with the doule bend.

Re: lokar shifter cable or linkage?
Thanks guys I was kinda worried that the linkage set up might not fit, but from the looks of it, it should work fine.

Re: lokar shifter cable or linkage?
I made my cable one using B&M and off the shelf parts, much cheaper than the kits.

Re: lokar shifter cable or linkage?
If you can look for one that mounts to the cab floor. I have the trans mount one and have had some issues. Mounted on the trans it thansfers all driveline vibration to the shifter, the longer the shifter the more shaking. The linkage did not adjust per Lokar, when in park I could not get 1st gear. When setting up adj in netural the detents on the shifter did not match the trans detents to MY likeing. This was fixed by making a longer lever(about 3/4")on the trans side. I cut the hole in the floor as small as I could for the shifter but I still was getting heat from the exhaust and underside comming up thru the floor.

Re: lokar shifter cable or linkage?
I was kinda worried about the shaking issue. Maybe a boot to fix the hole/heat thing.

Re: lokar shifter cable or linkage?
jjjmm56, get some fire safing insulation (it is denser than standard fiberglas and fireproof) and stuff it around the shifter inside the console. fab a closure out of black plastic with a hole the diameter of the shifter and sized to keep the oblong slot covered in all shift positions. Use a wire tie under the black piece to keep it snug against the console bottom. same with the insulation around the shifter in the console. That should help with heat and fumes.
Or fab a boot for the top and fill it with insulation (my solution for my transfer case shifters and the previous floor tranny shifter I had.).

Re: lokar shifter cable or linkage?
IMHO, the 32 is too long. Had the 32" in mine and it shook and was wobbly. Not a mechanical issue nor a slam on Lokar. I bought the Lokar 16" double bend and installed it, no shake and solid through the gears. It's just simple physics, the further the handle is from the fulcrum, the more the movement is amplified. I love the shifter in the shorter version.

Re: lokar shifter cable or linkage?
I have used both the Lokar rod type shifter and the B&M cable shifter.
Both grate shifters The B&M shifter came with a small consal and gear indicator (put this in a 88 Ford Ranger v8 auto prodject with flat floor.) Came with every thing to install including the shifter levers that bolt to the trans. since I was useing it with auto 4 Ford I had to get a supplemntery kit that replaced the shaft that trans lever bolted to. The lokar I used on a 74 nova that was auto consol car with floor mounted shifter. was easy to instal per instuctions. did not come with gear indidator, that is a sepert kit. only 2 problems I had was 1 I wanted to use my consol to cover the holes in my new carpet, can not find a ruber boot to cover shifter / hole (used the hole that was in floor from factory) 2 when ordering one of these the length is not from the floor mounting to the top of the knob but rather starts at the top of the shifter. The factory shifter mounted under the floor with just the lever above the foor so I ended up afew inches longer than I wanted. there is a boot kit for it , but it is a sewed vinyl with crome ring. The nova has 350/ 700r4.

Re: lokar shifter cable or linkage?
I have a trans mount 23 inch Gennie Shifter for my 350 turbo in my Model A and after riding in my friends truck with a Lokar cable shifter I wish I had one.
