how do I cut my fleetside bed apart?

I'm in the process of disassembling a bed I'm using for parts & I was wondering the details. its top-down right now & all thats sticking out of the snow is the very bottom. All the cross pieces & bolts are visible on the bottom & I dug the front of the bed out so I can cut those bolts off. I cut off ALL of the bolts I could get at on the bottom & I'll do the front tommorow BUT I heard that there are some welds that I gotta cut at the back of the bed & I think there are some bolts holding the wheel tubs onto the bedsides. What else to I have to do to get the bed apart? where are these welds & can I get them the way the bed is now? I cant wait till spring cause it''ll be a mud hole in the backyard till june & I dont wanna wait that long! Thanks!

Are you planning on using a torch or a plasma cutter? The tubs are bolted in. There are welds at the very back where the wall meets the floor. I believe the rest is just bolted together. I would just grind those welds off unless you don't care about damage.

i cut the bolts off with a anglegrinder & a cutoff wheel-can i use it to cut my welds? can you clarify where the welds are exactly? I cant flip the bed over right now so I'm hoping that I can get at them with the bed upside down.

You would have to flip the bed over to get to them. They are at the far rear inside corner where the floor meets the upright for the tailgate. Or, you gould remove the front bed panel and crawl inside.

Cut off wheel or even a sawzall. Look right on the bed floor where the tailgate would sit. I think there is also a small weld behind where the bottom of the tailgate would be. (kinda on the rear cross over) Looks like i got beat to it. Damn my slow typing skills!!! I can post pics tomorrow of areas if you need them. Eric

ok-so the welds are where the stakepockets meet the floor huh? & undfer the tailgate? I'm thinking i mayhave to dig more & unbolt the tailgate to get in there. the beds been upside down all winter & most of the fall - I hope theres no bears hibernating in there! Thanks so far you guys & Eric, I'd love some pics of what I'm supposed to be looking for. That would be awesome. anyone else got suggestions?

Those are the only ones i found when i did the short box (in the garage) last fall. The sawzall with a GOOD metal blade worked good, just a little grinding afterwards and cleaned up nice. Make sure before you re-weld that they are in correct position or the tailgate might not fit. Let me know if you need more pics tomorrow....Eric

Those welds arent fun to get out some times you just can't get any type of cutting tool in there so you might end up having to use a chisel in the end. I found a good trick for the front panel, those phillips head screws are usually stuck pretty good. If they dont come out right away take a torch and heat the head up, use a #3 phillips when they are hot and they will spin right out. Seems like a pretty common sense thing to do but it took me a while to catch on :p
