hi guys, i'm new to this forum sight, but not to the automotive world. so here's my problem. i have a chevy 350 in my 60 c10 and have been having a few problems with my valve train since i swapped to roller rockers. i think that a few of my rocker arm nuts keep backing off. but my question is when i go to adjust my rocker arms when the motor is off and cold, is it normal for a rocker arm to loosen up after i adjust it?? i'm getting ready to swap my rocker arm nuts for the type that have the set screw in the top and the last 2 times that i have adjusted my rocker arms i find that i have a few that are loose after i adjust them. any thoughts?? photos to come later.

just make sure the studs arent being pulled out of the casting its a really common thing and it will seem like the rockers will loosen up. if the are pressed in studs they will do that thats why i always switch to bolt in instead. the bolt in will have little nuts that are part of the stud just above the casting of the head. look carefully and see if they are bein pulled out and that might be the problem.

thanks gulf. how can i tell if the studs are pulling out?? i didn't build this 350. i just kinda took over a started project.

If you have hydraulic lifters, they'll collapse and feel loose again after initial adjustment. Adjust them once and go with that, once engine is running they'll pump up with oil and will be solid. I made the same mistake and ajusted them twice, when it was time to start motor I had a hell of a time because I over adjusted, and the valves weren't closing all the way. Went back loosened them all, adjusted once, engine fired right up.

I've always done my fine adjusting with the engine running, a little messy but it has always given me the best results. Jerry

The quick and dirty way is to pull the rockers and just lay a straight edge across the top of the studs. You'll see it right away if you have a problem

What kind of "problems with the valvetrain"?
