I want to spin both tires

I have a few hundred dollars saved up.

What is the cheapest route in order to give my 79 K10 a posi or locker? I'd like to keep the same gear ratio I have right now.

Re: I want to spin both tires

There are Detroit, ox, airlock. Many different types the most widely used would be detroit style. The will come in the carrier type you need.

You will need to know what the axle's ratio is to order the correct one. I would have a shop install it, unless you want to read up on how to install them.

You need a special tool from what I know to set the shims right for the pinion and ring gears.

Re: I want to spin both tires

I have a Auto class in high school tha I'll be doing this in, the teacher has been a mechanic for the past 30 years or so. I think he should help me get it right.

So if I know the axle type and the gear ratio, then I should be fine?

Re: I want to spin both tires

it would probably be much much cheaper to just find a complete rear end. 14FF with a posi out of a junkyard

Re: I want to spin both tires

How would i know if the 14 bolt would have a posi unit intact?

Also wouldn't it be a 8 lug?

Re: I want to spin both tires

Forgot you had 6 lugs. And pull the cover off and look. You could get a 10 or 12 bolt for real cheap. Just gotta hunt around for the right gears w/ posi

Re: I want to spin both tires

The only way to do it cheap is to weld it. Other than that... like bikes&bowties said... you gotta find a donor rear end with a posi already in it. However... if it does have a posi unit in it... the seller is prolly gonna want more for it than an open diff. You could also find a used limited slip (posi) out of a truck on ebay or CL.

You need to save up a little more cash...

Re: I want to spin both tires

Do I just bring a half inch socket with me and pull off the cover to the other axle to check if it has a posi? The gear ratio should be stamped into the teeth somewhere, shouldn't it?

Re: I want to spin both tires

Jack up the rear end so both tires are off the ground. If you spin one tire, and the other tire spins opposite... it has an open diff. If you spin one tire and they both spin the same way... it has a limited slip (posi) unit in it.

Re: I want to spin both tires

If you don't have a posi already, the fastest, easiest, cheapest way to lock up is with a 'lunchbox locker.' These replace the spider gears and side gears and you do not have to remove the carrier. Because of that you don't have to setup your ring and pinion again. You also don't have to worry about swapping a rear and still just having a gov-lock (GM factory posi) and who knows what kind of shape bearings, brakes etc. Some examples are a Powertrax lockrite or no-spin. I'm not sure who else makes one. The no-spin is supposed to be a little bit tougher I think.

Good luck.

Re: I want to spin both tires

Can you link me to these "lunchbox lockers" I've never even heard of them before. They sound like what I'm looking for. I've always heard that you could put a 6" lift and 35" tires and the locker would make more difference than the lift and tires.

I welded a corp. 10 bolt on our race car, that lasted 2 races before it exploded, now it sits in a pasture rotting away.

Try these links:

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWT-1910-LR/

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PWT-92-0788-3005/

I believe richmond gear owns powertrax so their web site might have more info about installation and applications, etc. I attached the links for 12 bolts as I assumed you were looking for one for your rear axle.

Re: I want to spin both tires

If you like your truck and plan on keeping it you will be better off finding a 14 bolt and building it up. If you want to lay rubber, a 14 bolt will take way more punishment.

Re: I want to spin both tires

you can find a semi float 6 lug 14 bolt and install a lock-rite locker. Or just put the lock-rite in your 12 bolt, but be easy on it. 10 and 12 bolts belong in a sewing machine, not a truck.

Re: I want to spin both tires

i used an aburn pro series locker in my 12bolt to replace the factory posi , it held up pretty good to my 70 chev with a 388 stroker. that was about ten years ago and the price i think was around 350 new. might be more now though

unless you have tires bigger than 35", don't listen to what people say about the 12 bolt being "weak"

Re: I want to spin both tires

It was a joke...c'mon guys relax.

On a budget, a 6 lug semifloat 14 bolt should be considered. It is remarkably stronger than a 12 bolt and could save money down the road.

I highly recomend the lockrite. they are great cheap units. ive used a 4 of them (in differant apps) and only broke one once. It really didnt even break the locker, just sheared off all four pins inside it.

And it sounds like his 360 is not stock, ive seen enough 10 and 12 bolts grenading with 33's burning out on pavement. I wasnt trying to be a richard cranium, just offering advise after what ive seen and done.

Hi Shilo,

Just for my own clarification.. When you say Semi-float - what exactly does that mean..? I have heard folks tell me to go get a 14 bolt because if one side breaks, you can still limp home on one wheel (scary thought) vs. a 12 bolt where you would be stuck.. I am not sure what float or no float means in that context..? I have a 12 bolt now but not really 4x4 wheeling it but then again if I go out somewhere the last thing I want to happen is something like that..

In addition, what models of trucks carry the Semi-float axles so I can begin my local junkyard search... I definitely want to keep my six lugs because of my old school slot mags and these sound much safer...
