Roof mods, what do you think?

So I've been kicking around the idea of keeping my extra '66 BBW cab and doors I've got since nobody wants to buy it, and using it for a future project. I've never been a fan of the bulky roof overhangs/visors on the 64-66 cabs, though they don't look as out of place on the 60-63 trucks. I did a quick edit using MS paint (don't have photoshop) and shortened the overhangs and leaned the back window in to match the angle of the trim piece. I kept the drip rails so it still looks like it could have been original, just reproportioned.

So what do yall think? I like it and will probably eventually start on it when I get project Goldilocks back on the road. I've got an extra roof for the inner panels to help with grafting everything back together on the inside, since leaning the rear window in will shorten the headliner panel.

Re: Roof mods, what do you think?

I don't like it either.
I also don't like it when guys remove the drip rail.
I like everything about these truck's body style and curves, so I don't have a desire to change anything from its intended look.

Re: Roof mods, what do you think?

I'm a big fan of the front brow so it wouldn't be something I'd want to do. If your not liking the brow then dare to be different. You'll like it and I would bet a lot of people wouldn't notice it until you pointed it out.

I think leaning the back in will open a big can of worms. It might not look right with a slanted back window. I would think it would be pretty hard to get the interior roof panels to match up right. Taller drivers would probably bumping thier head against the back window/panel. Just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Roof mods, what do you think?

Im alright without a drip rail (or filled drip rail) but in general that roof looks like a military Up N tight haircut.

Re: Roof mods, what do you think?

No offense taken, I didn't expect everybody to like it when I posted it. Everybody has different taste, different opinions, and I can appreciate that. Just something I've had in the back of my mind for a few years, and haven't done anything with yet.

Here's another pic with shorter overhangs. Not totally gone, just shorter.

Well, not exactly my cup'o'tea, but to each their own. Its the "different" things that make our trucks unique to their owners. I mean, some would call it blasphemy that I'm putting a 401 nailhead in my 64 gmc, but hey, I like different. So if its what you like, then by all means, grab that beast by the horns and take no prisoners.

Sorry man, I like the stock roof more forsure. I actually like the overhangs. I like vent windows too. But then again, I'm more of resto rod type of person; it never goes out of style

If you're still looking to offload those doors shoot me a msg. IDK if they're the same ones we talked about once before or not, I never got a msg from you about those.

Mike, I sent a few pics of those doors and description back on 8/25 but I guess it didn't go through; not the first time hotmail has failed me. I'll try again with my gmail account Sorry about the delay!

I'll send you a PM, didn't mean for this to be a classified ad for the cab.

It looks like I'm the only one that likes the altered roof lines. Maybe changing the roof lines wouldn't be such a good idea, especially if I was to ever sell the truck one day, seems it would make for a smaller group of people that would be interested in buying it.

Re: Roof mods, what do you think?

I think with the right truck it could be spectacular...It would have to be a very updated truck, meaning big wheels, low, frenched bumpers, shaved door handles. The rendering looks cool, but I like the rear overhang.

Blasphemy? NO!!!
GMC used Pontiac v8's in their trucks during the 50's, so why not.
I've always been a fan of Nailheads, and I had a 401 in a '57 Chevy pickup a few years back. I now have a '32 F*rd pickup with a 364 that just plain hauls *SS!!!
Viva La Nailhead!!!!!

My thoughts exactly. It would have to be a mod on a truck with a well thought out theme. Various mods all over to blend it all together. On a relatively stock truck it would look a little funny I think.

Re: Roof mods, what do you think?

As for the roof issue, I wouldn't do it (especially to a BBW). The only thing I might do, is notch the roof drip rail so it can drain down the A pillar drip rail. I feel it's something that was "overlooked" in th original design.

It definitly wouldn't be a stock truck at all. Leaning toward a resto-mod/pro touring theme with an emphasis on factory style detailing. Custom rectangle/round tube frame, C5 Vette suspension (with 6 speed transaxle in rear for better weight balance, and don't have to hack up the bed floor to go low with IRS), Big Block with cross ram individual runner EFI, detailed to look like something GM could have built (painted intake manifold and heads, cast look throttle bodies coated to look like carb bodies, original air cleaner lid snorkels cut off to use as velocity stacks- with "AC" decals, cast look headers/manifolds, original style wrapped wiring harness), tucked bumpers, recessed grill, two stock bench seats cut down to make buckets with original style upholstery, 18/20" billet smoothies with stock hubcaps, original satin gold interior paint... I want it to appear semi-stock but with more modern proportions. The roof overhangs were more of a late 50's/early 60's styling trend, and by 1964-66 the roofs on everything else were alot smoother. I'm not talking about completely doing away with the overhangs, especially not the rear, just making them smaller. The front may stick out 1.5" or so, so it wouldn't be totally gone. Just smaller for a little sleeker profile.

That made me think about this photoshop truck I found on the hub. Check out the way he drew the back of the cab. He leaned the back in but extended the sheet metal around the back window to keep it flat.

Re: Roof mods, what do you think?

Personally, I like your idea! I'm a fan of making one's truck look the way one wants it too... I've done a few body mods to mine that aren't well received by all.

I'm anxious to see what you come up with as a final design.

John

Those are some slick drawings! I changed it a bit to more closely replicate my idea.
