fuel gauge stuck past full? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm new to the forum. I have a question, maybe someone has delt with this before.
I have a 78' k20 with dual tanks. my fuel gauge is sittin' at "past full" It dosn't move at all when I switch between tanks.
Any suggestions would help, Thanks.

I've had lots of problems lately with my dual tanks. I pulled the wire off the sending unit and noticed the gas guage went to full. Maybe your wire is broken? Check the ground wire also. If it's not the wires, check with you local parts house for new sending units. They must be stuck in the full position. My problem is, even with new sending units, my gas gauge is only reading 1/4 tank, when there is more in them

i used to want dual tanks cause i'd only have to fill up once every so often, but after hearing all the trouble folks have with them (on top of the fact i have learned shorties / short steppies aren't ment for dual), i no longer want em.

I love my duel tanks. I can pull up to the pump on either side of the truck. Makes it real nice when the gas station is busy.

There is no better filling when driving in BFE when a tank is getting low and just flipping the switch and see the fuel gage going all the way up!

Its just not fun when you have to fill them both up $$$

You need to check the wire from the guage to the switching valve, and then to the tanks them selves. When a guage pegs full it is because the circuit has to much resistance. This is caused by a broken sending unit wire, bad units, or bad grounds. I am assuming you have checked to make sure the guage has power. When you check the wire at the switching valve, just ground it, the guage should show empty. Hope this helps.

when i fill mine up, it goes WAYYY past F and when it gets to just below 1/4 i know its almost empty.. i let it get to E once and it was rattling so bad and about to die for 50 ft while pulling into the gas station...
it doesnt get stuck but i am afraid that it will someday

Since you have dual tanks and it is occuring on both tanks, the most likely problem is an open ground.
