Govt. Surplus Auction, M1008, any one buy one this way?

Hey,
Any one here ever buy anything at government surplus auctions, especially the M1008, M1009, or M1028 4x4s? Any problem removing from depot? Title? Loading? As for the vehicles, hard to swap from 24V to 12V? SHOULD you swap from 24V to 12V? Any one convert one of these rigs to a 5.7? Is the paint on these things really hazardous to remove? thanks for any info.

Where are you located? I noticed that Mechanisburg was selling a lot of three blazers on their website. I know that the 1 ton pickup are geared very very low and have lockers in the rear, not sure on the front. You will usually find that all military vehicles have low miles but they sit around running a lot. I am sure that the paint is a PITA though. As for hazardous I would have to ask some buddies at work. All Army vehicles are coated with CARC paint (Chemical Agent Resitant Coating). I wouldn't be to scared but would research and buy a respirator if working on the paint. Here is a website I found for you... This relates to Gulf War Syndrom...

I've looked at several but the complete package for the 1 ton wasn't completely what I was looking for. They all did appear to be pretty rust free. The ones I looked at had 4.56 gear with locker in back, only had the NP208 tranfer case and the not so hot diesel. Nothing you couldn't switch over if you didn't like.

Ive bought one, easy to do. Bid, pay, schedule a pick up, and pick it up. Some sites will help load, some wont. You need to call before you bid, some sites are only available one day weekly/every two months. Once you pay, you will get an invoice on your account, print it and you may need to fax it to the site manager, depending on the site.

The one that I bought ran and drove, I drove it over 200 miles the day after I bought it. They have 6.2, th400,np208 (1028s have the 205) 4.56s-14 bolt/dana60 axles. The blazers have 10 bolts with 308s. Only the starting system is 24v, everything else is 12volt. They are great trucks, but the prices have gone up over the last few months.

Vehicle registration, well thats a different beast all together. They will issue a sf-97 form, you can use this to register it in your state. Pay attention and make sure that the one you bid on has the forms needed. Depending on the state the paperwork is needed to get a title. Now NC has local inspectors that can come by and sign off on the vehicle and you can receive a title with their help. Anyway, hope this helps. ive converted a couple of old deuce an a halfs into fire trucks, if i were you i would plan on blasting the paint off. probably too many brush painted coats to sand. i dont think it's toxic

If you run into any group deals (ie lot of two or three) trucks or blazers let me know and I may go in with ya. I have no need (neither does the wife!) for three blazers in the yard! But one for parts is another story.

thanks for all the replies. Did register on GL to bid on a M1008. Checked out the steelsoldiers website also. Really looking for a parts truck to go with my 86 c30, another 2 into 1 deal if you get my drift. An M1008 or M1028 with a bad engine seems the perfect fit. Also have my eye on an 88 K30 with a bad engine. I'll let you all know what I find.

Those trucks aren't used very hard. Those are all national guard trucks that sit sround most of the year (which isn't that good either). It would be a good investment or start for a mean off road rig. Good Luck!

Got outbid. The M1028 truck went for $1525.00 , someone got a good deal.Checked out an 88 K30 that was the newer style, needed a trans and transfer cas, steering column and has an enclosed plumber's service body on it. Oh well.

too bad man i love those and want one too but no space right now. i did buy an m882 off the us go for my first vehical. for those who don't know that is the 1977 dodge powerwagon rated at 1 1/4 ton. great tuff truck with 49 thousand orignal miles on it. i should have kept it but the wiring was driving me nuts and the t cas was messed up. Also that truck had a bad exhaust valve on it because it sat running alot. even still a nice soldid truck. good luck on the hunt
