which title do i use?

my truck will be a combination of body parts from 2 trucks and a self made frame. my question is what to do for a title? the truck that i have a title for all i am using is the bed. the cab is off another one that i do not have a title for. does the title go with the cab or the frame? if it goes with the cab is it legal to transfer the vin plate from one to another? maybe i should have thought about this earlieri have seen many cab swaps here so i know there is a way. please help.

It depends on your state. Officially you should not swap vin tags from one cab to another.

Best bet (and most legal) is to check and see what your DMV says. More than likely they will use the frame # as the basis to create you a new one for licensing purposes.

In other states I have lived in it was not much more than the normal title registration fee, if that.

Re: which title do i use?

You shouldn't technically ever transfer a VIN plate from one cab to another.

The VIN plate is held in place by four 1/8 rivets. The rivets are available on the internet if you look (do a Google). The rivets would need an 1/8 inch drill bit to remove them and a POP rivet gun to replace them.

You shouldn't do that though. You should go through the hellacious wringer of dealing with the DMV trolls so they can scratch their heads, give you countless documents to fill out and have notarized, then repeat till you're damn near crazy.

Rather than swap them in your own garage, support the DMV folks.

Be sure and repaint underneath the VIN plate when you have it off.....

Re: which title do i use?

talk to a state trooper, NC is very weird and strick on certain title-vin issues.
Usually the stamp the frame, like they would do for a trailer and issue a new VIN plate. Not cheap, easy or quick but beats your vehicle being impounded or........
rerivet VIN plate on cab you are using and considering the age, don't have it inspected
