Suburban A/C

I am getting ready to install A/C in my suburban. My Question , Has anyone installed it in there truck? Thoughts as Original vs aftermarket? Are you satisified with the results?Its about 3 times the space as a pickup to cool. Recomendations of types, brands. "Old Air" vs "Vintage Air" vs the " Ultra Hi Performance Classic Auto air" or Original? Any feedback is greatly appreciated.Thanks

Check to see if any of them offer a rear unit.Maybe get the rear unit from a newer suburban or van and incorperate it into an aftermarket system.The aftermarket systems are set-up for 134.A lot cheaper to charge.

I have an original 72 dual a/c setup that I haven't hooked up yet, I was going to put it into my 71'. Don't know how well they work. I have been looking into using the A/C out of an 88+ CK p/u for the front and a late 80's burb rear A/C unit to put into my 72'. The 88+ unit is nice and compact & should fit under the dash well. Haven't done it yet but plan to when the weather gets a little better.

I know your probably asking yourself why I am putting a 72 unit in a 71 and a later unit in the 72. The 71 is getting a 454 and I have all the correct BB a/c stuff already and the 72 I may be putting my polished TPI in and I have all the s/b serpentine brackets/pulleys/and the compressor for it already...

There is a 68 on ebay with the available aftermarket unit on the rear celing. Seems pretty generic. The hoses are even visable. Dont really like it.Can a factory rear unit be attached to a new systemand will any new system power both units?I suppose that the rear unit would have to be converted?? That is not a stock unit.On 67-71 they had a tunnel from the rear unit that ran to the front.On 72 they had a unit mounted like the one on ebay,but it fit all the way across.The newer compact units can be built into the rear side panels.The a/c lines to the rear unit are spliced into the front lines with a T fitting.There is a dash mounted switch to turn the rear off and on.

that unit looks like just an under dash one mounted on the roof. I have one exactly like it under my dash in my 65

Does anyone know where I can see one of these rear units? A salesman at "Old Air' says that they have one, but no pictures are available. $640 please.Thats just for the additional rear unit. I would feel much better seeing a unit before I send cash. I thought the one in my post was the aftermarket, maybe not. I hope not; dont like the look of it.Smokekiki, so can I assume that there is no problem with an aftermarket unit powering both units? Thanks guys for your imput so far.

I have a '69 Burb. I should be receiving a rear unit from a '72 later this week or next. The techs at Vintage Air told me their unit would adapt to this fairly easily. You would either have to have the a/c hoses made locally or they can supply them. I believe they said they were about a dollar a foot. From what I have been told by many people is that the Sanden compressor, which all the aftermarket companies use, is much more efficient than the stock units and uses less horsepower. If you order an aftermarket kit, let them know you will be using this for a Burb w/rear air, and they should able to hook you up with a larger Sanden compressor. Another idea I had was to use the older tunnel a/c and block off the front two vents for the front passengers and set it up for indash a/c. This would be similiar to the way the new Burbs have thir a/c setup in that each seat has their own a/c.

We put a '72 unit in my '69. What switch can I find that is factory? I am just using a 3 speed generic switch for now.

I think the 72 burb rear air units were used in later GM burbs for maybe a decade. I haven't been able to verify this. I just wanted to throw it out there in the hope that someone knows what year burbs had rear air units that bolt right into 67-72 roof mounting points. Then, with application info, maybe a junkyard find would reduce costs in the effort.

Wouldnt that be sweet to know! By the way, I have decided to put a factory rear air in my truck.How much does a complete unit usually sell for? Any for sale?

Not really.My 99 ford van has a rear air unit that is the driverside wall.It is set up like the suburbans.The a/c lines are tapped into the front unit.

I have temporarily mounted the '72 housing, but not the blower motor. How did you mount yours?? I figure I will have to get a piece of metal to use as a brace that will go between the two sides and mount the blower motor to that. As for the switch, I figure that Vintage Air has a control on one of their control panels. It is not original, but I am not going for that.

See my answer to rear air switch also. A lot of later subs and also conversion vans have the rear air very similar to the early subs you are talking about. I would venture to say that 50% of the burbs and 75% of the conversion vans have that option out here.

I don't have a Burb but I covet a Panel so I'm always looking for parts.

If anybody has adapted one of these units please post it here. I believe the mechanicals would work without a hitch but making the inside cover fit might be another story.
