10 000 lb Superwinch

local parts store has Superwinch winches on sale. 10000 lb for $399, 15500 lb for $899. i would rather have the 15500 (1 ton crew), but for $399 & double lining, how good are they, seems like a big price drop between the 2, any body using either of them?

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

They're good winches from what I've heard. My best friend has one,not sure which, but at least 12k if not the 15. He's not afraid to use it and it's been doing everything it's been asked to do. $900 is great for a 15,000# winch. $400 for a 10k??? That's crazy cheap. But,it's just not quite enough for a full-size truck. I'd want at least 12,000#. Not saying a 10k would be worthless, but I'd want more

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

Superwinch has a couple of lines, just make sure it's their premium winch and you'll be good to go. I had an S2500 on my car trailer for a long time, just recently replaced it with an S5000. Not because the 2500 had failed but because the bigger winch has a wired remote. And it's faster. Been very happy with Superwinch.

With that said, I have a Warn 9500 on my Duramax truck. It is a short drum winch that mounts between the frame rails. Only has 50 feet of cable, but I've drug my truck with car trailer behind it and a K2500 Suburban on it out of the mud. Not buried to the frame rails, but unable to move forward on its own. 10,000 pounds should be plenty of winch for occasional recovery.

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

Most non indusrial electric winches are rated at stall, that is the point that the electric motor can not move and the input current is at maximum. Also, if your electrical system can not supply that current level the winch will stall at a lesser load level. Usually most winch manafactures will create a higher capacity winch by increasing the gear ratio and in turn slowing down the line speed. It will pull more but it will require a longer time to pull the load. Check all the manafactures specs. Quality winches are SAE 706 rated. They are rated to actually run and pull at the max rated amount. They also have a bult is safety factor.

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

The 10,000 lb which would probably be enough for most 3/4-1ton apps. Unless your in mud above the frame, should be ok.It's not like your trying to lift the truck straight up.Another option is using a snatch block & doubling your pulling power.

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

thanks for the replies. i had to do a double take when i saw $399. the last winch i had was a Milemarker 12500, good winch. my dad's running a Warn 8274 (since '84 or'85!). i would rather get a 15k winch (my crew is right 7500lbs), but for the price, i'm going back there tomorrow & buy one. now that i have receivers at both ends, i will be cradle mounting it, & if turns out not strong enough, i can always put it on my stepside & upgrade the crew

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

A couple of my buddies bought them. I have heard they're comparable to a warn 6000 lb internally and the thing that I find sort of unnerving about them is that they are made to mount bottom down as opposed to the front bolting into your bumper. All of the pulling fore will be yanking on the bolts instead of pressing against the bumper. One of my buddies clocked his though so it does press on the bumper.

Does this make sense?

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

well, went & had a good look at the 10k, i just dont think it's going to cut it on my crew. but i bought one anyways, (to cheap not too) it will find a nice home on my s.side. i still got 2 yank straps & a 75ft KERR rope for the crew 'till i find what i really want- a warn 16.5 or milemarker 15.5

That extra $500 price difference will buy a lot of cable and snatch blocks. I like good equipment, but I would take a $400 10k winch and $200 worth of accessories over a $900 15k winch any day. Heck, with enough additional equipment, I can pull a Semi out of 6 ft of mud with a 2000lb winch.

you sure can! couple winters ago i pulled the wife's envoy out of a snow bank with her atv with a 2500lb winch. but see'in how the crew is my toy & a keeper, i like overkill & dont mind spending money on it. IF i ever got stuck with our camper & trailer, our 14k would be a real test for a 10k winch

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

Superwinch has been manufcating that sidewinder design since the early-to-mid 70’s. Vic Hickey may have been first with it, I am not sure… I do recall that Vic advertised his winches by hanging a K5 blazer from an Oak tree limb…

I have one on my 79’ K-30, PO says was factory installed ( I doubt it, more than likely dealer installed) but Hey’ it still works…

Re: 10 000 lb Superwinch

seen something similar to that. was going by the car wash once, & a guy with a jeep had thrown his winch cable over a steel beam holding up the roof & winched it to about a 50-60 degree angle & was spraying mud off the bottom
