Gawd I hate to do it but I'm going to put speakers in the doors of my 85. I can't believe GM didn't do it from the factory. Anyone out there done it? What did you use? How bad a job was it.

do you have power windows?? if you do then your window motor is at the bottom forward part of the door. i tryed to mount speakers in mine a few years ago and wound up running into the window motor.

i cut my doors. i have manual windows and locks, so i had to drill holes and add grommets. not too tough, used a jigsaw w/ metal cutting blade. i put 6X9s in.

if you get the speakers in the back and the ones in the front you dont need the doors trust me i threw out OEM doors with speaker holes

Done it on a 69 one time,didnt like it .Would not recomend it.Go to walmart and buy some cheap ($20) boxes and put behind the seat.They sound as good as any ,unless you want a high dollar syatem.........

I'd suggest you look into a set of kick panel speaker enclosures. They sound great, and there is no cutting up of metal involved!

There's an article in the December 2007 "Custom Clasic Truck" Magazine That has a how-to on putting speakers behind the door vents. May have been scanned by someone here - sorry, I don't recall.

I say leave the doors alone...just a "big" job with little return. If you put a nice set of 6x9s in the 4x10 brackets behind the seats (remember to use speaker stuffing) and a decent set of 3 1/2's (?) in the dash you will get solid sound. If you have to have larger speakers in the front go with the kicker panel inserts.

On a side note, has anyone replaced the factory speaker in the middle of the dash? I was thinking about it, but after i replaced the other 4 it sounded plenty good and i haven't revisited that idea in a while.

Ok you guys win I won't cut the doors. I am now looking at the kick pannels that LMC has as they come with speakers. I don't need a super powerful system like you young guys. I'm just an an old part who wants to listen to the classic country and the oldies.

i bet those are pretty nice, but i don't think i'd have the heart to even put more screw holes in the door panels on mine

i have to agree i put some infinitys 6.5 inchers in the factory brackets i found in the bone yard with some matching 3 inchers in the dash and it was good for basic music ( with good amp). To round it out i got one of those new slim line series woofers behind seat and it sounds great. None of these items are visible from outside. All this is through a apline shaft stereo also from junk yard that has rca outputs. Also took ashtray apart put kenwood narrow style eq there so thats hidden too. just suggestion any way.

i use to werk at a stereo shop for 3 yrs.. i havent painted em yet.. prolly jus goin to spray bomb em flat black!! and i got the tiki door locks at mooneyes.com

All you guys have this big beef with cutting the doors... why?

I've done it, twice, and no problems at all...

Although, I do have to say that Kick panels will sound better.

for me its becuase my truck still has 95% of the parts it rolled of the assembly line with...

For me, I think it looks ghetto/redneck...especially when they are mounted to non-carpeted lower doors. JMHO.

I agree...but his doors are covered/finished. The speakers aren't just hacked into a steel door with the factory rib and vent showing.
