Unhappy Im bummed

Im bummed i just decoded the engine block numbers on my 70C10 and i thought i had a 350. Well it isnt the code is 355909 witch is a 1975-1983 305. Now i need to get a 350 to replace that 305 that just made my day.

Hey man if you were happy with it before just leave it alone especially if it already runs good not much of an upgrade unless you just want to go with a rebuilt

Re: Im bummed

I feel your pain, I thought mine may have been a 350 as well, but turned out to be a 305.

On the positive side, it's very durable, reliable and does not smoke at all just down on power a little bit compared to the average Camry .

So, if you just want a 350, consider sticking with the little 305 until you can afford an engine that you really would like.

Re: Im bummed

Don`t worry about it.It`s just a bunch of numbers. What`s the problem? Were you trying to figure why it wasn`t running better and discovered it was a 305?Or,was everything fine until you ran the number?I`d be happy with a 194 if it got my truck down the road well enough to not know what was under there. You stand a better chance at optimum fuel economy with the smaller displacement.
There`s nothing wrong with the 307 either.Prolly one of the most under-rated small blocks out there. Many got pulled and tossed just to have a 350 with half a handful more horsepower. Many of the ones that stayed in are still powering these trucks.GM never based a performance motor on it because back them it was all about going bigger and the 307 was the economy V8.The 305 never would have seen an H.O. application if it wasn`t in use during the Downsize era. It`s certainly no better motor than a 307.

Re: Im bummed

I would much rather have a 307 than a 305. The 307 has a better bore to stroke ratio than the 305. The 307 is basically a 283 block with a 327 crank. You can safely bore the blocks .100 over and have a 323 ci engine.

The weak link in the 305 is the very undersized bore(3.785). It's wht helps it in the gas mileage dept. though.

70chevyc10, if your just driving it, there's nothing bad about a 305. If you're wanting more hp, well, I understand your disappointment.

I think about that alot too.

My parts truck, I was told was a 350, but it turned out to be a 305. It ran real strong until the rod bearing gave out, so as other have said if it runs good and you were OK with it until you ran the numbers, then I would run withit until you get the funds to do the engine the way you want it to, including buying a new one if that is what you want.

I felt that way a few times, especially at the gas pumps, but I get over it as soon as I mash the GO-Pedal.

I would actually like to buy a beater truck with a 250 in it just to have.

The 60 Chevy truck I bought when I was 18 was supposed to have a 327 in it, but I later found out it was a 262 out of a Monza.. It didn't lose any power once I found out, but it didn't feel as "cool" either...

I had the same similar thing happen, customer had a '79 Chevrolet C30 with a reefer unit on the back. He complained it had low power so he wanted us to install a 4 barrel intake on it. After doing a little number crunching, found out the motor was a 267 out of Malibu or Monte Carlo.... He decided to leave it alone and drove it for many, many more miles before the truck finally rusted out (that never happens here in Wisconsin ). Guess the 267 just didn't make enough power to blow up either!!! Truck actually ran super, just a little low (alot low) on power!!!
My opinion on the 305, if it runs and drives and get's the job done, leave it in there and tell everyone it is a 350. Nobody will be able to tell while looking at it!!! The 305's were good motors, just they were overshadowed by the 350!!!
Good luck!

Mike

Re: Im bummed

As I said before I was dissapointed with my 307 it had no balls and it felt like a four banger, sold the complete powertrain back to the guy I bought the truck from he is using it in an older impala or something he said then I buil me a small block 400 with all the bells and whistles and the thing feels like getting hit with a 2x4 accross your back when you step on it.....I could not be happier with the motor so far, I am having a leak issue with my tranny but that is a complete different situation...

Re: Im bummed

DOn't feel bad if it runs good. I had a 305 (non-original) in my 69 swb for almost 2 years, it wasn't bad, just not quite as peppy as a 50 would be. it finally gave out mothers day weekend the number 7 rod decided he wasn't going to my mothers house with me, so it left me and took a piece of block casting with it as a hostage. FInd you a nice block and build it til your content, and swap them one weekend. enjoy the mpg!!

I had a 67 SWB Big back window sold to me with a 327/Powerglide
combo only to find out the 327 had been pulled and it was a 283.

Re: Im bummed

Don`t you wonder what a 307 would run like with all the bells and whistles?Sure, not like a 400.But,you may be surprised.Really, when does anyone see a built-up 307?The trend has always been to go bigger, naturally. And,I like a big motor. But,with things changing I`d like to see how small a motor I can get enough power from and get best mileage.A new approach to performance that involves not necessarily going fast, just strong. But,pretty fast if you want.

I might be able to let you know this spring. My nephews and I race dirt track cars and one of them is just starting out and is looking at the "rustybolt" class which has a rule of no bigger than a 305 @ .060 over. So If he goes this direction it WILL be a built 305. On a side note 307's are not allowed in this class BUT you can bore a 305 and make it more CI's than a 307 stock...anybody want to explain why (maybe)?

On the original issue...take the money you save on gas throw it in a jar, when it gets full then you have a decision to make...dump the slightly underpowered 305 that just saved you a jar full of money OR fulfill your testosterone enduced urge to go with the 350.

Re: Im bummed

I know the feeling. IMNSHO 305's make thge best boat anchors money can buy. I have had two of them and both tanked between 90k & 100k....both had lower knocking problems.

There's a reason you don't see too many 307's built up and it's the same reason there's not a lot of 305's out there.

Sure there's a few and there's always going to be a few who swear by them, but for the most part they are hard to find. There's very little a 305 or 307 can do that a 327 or 350 can't do much better.

my truck had a 305 in it when I got it. PO also cut open a heater box to replace a blown up heater core. I took 305 to work and gave it to a scrap man.

Re: Im bummed

this is why I never buy a truck or car without first running the numbers ,an old car with a 305 or 307 doesn't have the value of one with a 350 . 327 or 400 I went to look at a 71 longbed 2 weeks ago for a donor guy said it had a 350 ran the numbers and it was a 305 it was a good running truck , but try selling a truck for $15,000 with a 305 in it (thinking of my current project)
