in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

have any of you guys put in a fuel cell in the bed of your truck instead of underneath? (Im sure some of you longbed guys have) I just got a fuel cell 12 gallon, I believe with all the attatchments and I was thinking of mounting in a bed box and moving the battery to the box as well. any ideas? pros? cons? opinions? thanks
Going in a 67 long wide 350/350 carburated.
Also whats that foam material inside the cell for? I got it from a swap meet, never used so I dont know the manufacturer. Its got anti slosh walls in it too
( at least I think thats what they are)Mainly around the sending unit.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

I have been thinking of using my bed for fuel and batt. also, but Im thinking of using a 20 gal. aluminum round tank like old school. the foam in your tank it to prevent the fuel from sloshing around.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

I've seen a few where the origonal incab tank was just moved into the bed, rigth up in the front by the cab. Then build a little cover for it.

Or do like my dad, he just put an old WWII gas can *big metal* in the back of his jeep and ran a hose into it with a red rag over the top. LOL it workedfor a month or two until he got the tank in.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

Can I buy a life insurance policy for you with me as the beneficiary??
You may find that having a gasoline tank in the bed of your truck is illegal and at a minimum dumb. Flip a cigarette ash out the window and the air swirl will pull it right back into the front of the bed!!!
Met a guy in Texas who flipped his butt out the window and it flew back into his bass boat. The boat when on fire while he was towing in down the interstate at 65mph. He couldn't decide if going faster would blow it out or stop to unhook before it blew up!! He stopped, unhooked quick and it Blew!! The Ranger melted as did the 150 Merc!

I don't think it is much safer than having the tank in the cab.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

I don`t think the tank in the cab is unsafe at all.A tank in the bed is way times more dangerous. Here`s a comparison:
Safe vs Unsafe...yup,no comparison.

The truth about cigarettes though is that they wont burn hot enough to light gasoline or Diesel. Gasoline is much easier to ignite than Diesel is, but the problem is that the flash point if each is higher than a cigarette will burn.

Mythbusters proved this.

This is why you can sit in the same cab as you have a fuel tank in and smoke.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

As for the OP, I wouldnt put a tank in your bed, I would put it underneath, or if you are going to put it in your bed, buy a true to the form solid steel or aluminum truck bed tank that was designed to go in your truck bed. They will hold up a lot better in an accident, and they are designed to be installed to your bed.

They are available at about any tractor supply, or there are countless other manufacturers and distributors out there who will have them.

Good luck with your build.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

agree about a cig lighting gas. fill a cup wit gas and throw a cig in it. it'll put out the cig and won't explode. Tryed it. its truth.

Cab in tank is just as dangerous as cab in front of bed IMO. Having the tank between the frame in the rear is the whole reason the pinto sucked so bad. One rear end and your exploded. *i know the grammer is bad*

Anyway, didn't mean to cause a safty issue, just giving the only alt to the between the frame relocation. grain of salt here ppl.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

I just always ask,"What good is a truck that can just haul it`s gas around?"I like to keep my bed clear for cargo and use the dead space behind the seat for my gas tank. There couldn`t be a safer place,IMO,in the center of the vehicle,up high, away from the elements, and caged in the cab.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

special-k all my friends think that the tank in the cab of my truck is like a bomb sitting behind me but if you think about it you have it caged in the center of the cab(more or less) and you have the front of the truck and the bed that another vehicle would have to go throuh to reach the tank

Its safe as long as you never need to be jaws of lifed out of your vehicle. Then if they arent careful they will run right into it. After my accident i dont want that gas tank anywhere near me. My new 70 already has the gas tank relocated to under the bed behind the wheels. On a side note the fire crew took 45 minutes to put those two little cuts in the cab, they originally where gonna cut the top off, but i ended up getting fed up with waiting in the cab that i told them to move away from the door and i kicked it open lol.

Yes, it is true that gasoline itself does not burn....it is the vapors that ignite. Now how many times have you climbed into the cab and smelled gasoline?? Throw a cigarette or a match into a cup (or tank) of gasoline and it will not ignite. Dump a little bit out of that cup onto any surface, and watch what happens when you throw a cigarette on it.

Of course, if you don't smoke I wouldn't worry about it.

Re: in bed tanks. Need opinions!!

Cigreets`n` gas fumes is bad fer yer health. That`s what my pappy used to say.
There are always exceptions to a "best" location. The fact is,all vehicles are potential fire bombs. So if you`re going to mess with relocating a tank it`s in your hands. The fact is,after over 35 years there have been so few bad incidences resulting from fuel tanks being behind the seat that it never became an issue. If you smell fumes in the cab then something needs fixed in the venting or you have a leak.
I just would never move the tank as a matter of safety.Any fireman that would start cutting on an old truck in the behind the seat area has no business holding the Jaws of Life in his hands. They should know enough about vehicle construction to be aware that all older Ford,GM,and Dodge trucks have fuel tanks behind the seat. Also, there`s no need to be cutting down there. You`d want to cut the pillar between the glass....Wait,are we talking Jaws of Life (a huge portable power shear) or a cut-off saw which makes sparks from the circular blade?
Like anything,do what you like. It`s in your hands when you go changing things. And,that goes for liability as well.Something else to think about. This is an opinion thread or I wouldn`t have said so much.I`m just doing a bit of myth busting of my own.

Yes a jaws of life was used, and your right they shoulda known(or at the very least looked in there). But my point was they didnt, and aside from adding instructions and taping them to the hood on how not to use the jaw of life, it wont be a for sure thing that they dont do that. Your right tho these are opinions.
