1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

Hello everyone!!! Semper Fi!!! I am green as can be when it comes to restoring a vehicle and I need all of the guidance, wisdom, sarcasm, jar head jokes I can get. When it comes to using a forum such as this and starting a thread I am just as green as well. So green that I can't even figure out how to post pictures of what I am working with. I believe its a good start and I got it at the best price, free. (My ex walked out on my daughter and I in 2012. As a part of the divorce I was given her Dodge Ram quad cab which I traded for my K10.)

Currently I am recovering from a total hip replacement and preparing for a second. To keep me positive and busy during my recovery I decided what could be more rewarding than working on the truck. It runs great and I will post the description of what the previous owner did to the truck. I am the third owner.

I am looking at building a solid, strong, impressive truck that will last and conquer any task I put before it. Taking it hunting, fishing, maybe a local show, and blowing the doors off anyone needing their doors blown off.

I hope this is a good start and I look forward to getting to know everyone. I am going to primarily use my iPhone to post pictures. If I knew how that would be great? I know you would enjoy pictures over my typing. Thanks.

There you have it. That's what I am starting with. I think it's a good start but you never know what's hiding.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

Spent the afternoon at a local Machine/Performance shop going over options. Looks like I am going to go with a 383 Stroker. The owner of the shop and his employees were helpful and appeared trustworthy. Busy place. Everyone was friendly. I am going to have him build the bottom end for me and I should bring home a completed short block to finish. He is going to allow me to stop by the shop and check in and see the engine progress through the different stages. I'll post pics as I can.

On a side note the engine currently in the truck is strong, reliable, and will be for sale.

Looks like a solid foundation & I'm glad your machine shop recommended a power plant w/an emphasis on torque. That's going to help get the weight & big tires moving well.....

Thanks for your service & sacrifices for the rest of us!

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

Semper Fi!! Thank you for saying hi.

No picture updates but so far I put forward the money to get the machine shop moving on selecting a block and starting the machine work. I was quoted $1560 for labor which includes cleaning the block, mag block, bore and hone with plates, install cam bearings, assemble short block, degree cam, file fit rings, deck block, align hone, clearance for stroker, install Pistons and rods, and balance.

I spent a few days researching parts distributors and located one that is veteran friendly which enabled me to purchase a rotating assembly. I am going with an Eagle rotating assembly part #12107030. Should be arriving on Thursday and hopefully by Friday I will have it at the machine shop.

I hope to stop by the machine shop tomorrow and check out the block and take a picture of it so I can post its progress.

Until then I keep looking at threads and watching all the videos I can to learn as much as I can. Any suggestions on videos regarding any part of restoring the truck would be much appreciated.

Re: 1972 K10 Disabled Veteran First Build

Looking for advice. I have seen where builds have started with the body of the truck and worked from there. I am starting mine with the engine. As I have mentioned before my plan is for a 383 stroker. I have made a bunch of phone calls and watched a bunch of videos. From all the advice I have been given I have come up with the following options. I'll break each option up by part for easier reading and reply. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks. The block will be a 350 4 bolt main with one main seal.

Rotating Assembly:

Eagle Rotating Assembly #12107030
Mahle Forged Piston -16cc
Forged Crankshaft 3.75 stroke 4340 steel
H Beam Rods 5.7"

Per manufacturer website calculator using pin height 1.425, gasket .040, and 64cc head should come out to 9.38:1 compression.
