harness questions

so did some of yall work your own harness to go into the squares?
or did you have it done by a shop like nelsons or wheatly.

i checked a price at nelsons in san antonio and it was 450$..

with all you gurus that have done the ls swap before
can it be done by me? with help from here of corse

what all is involved labeling and ?

Go to LT1swap.com and study it, it will tell you just about anything you would need to know about making your harness stand alone. If you have specific questions, they can be answered here, but for an over all" how to" Brendan has done a great job of taking the leg work out of it with his site.

My harness was about $500, but it was setup for everything I wanted, and came with its own nice fuse panel etc. Was totally worth it imo, just not having to screw with it. I liked having un-cut connectors etc underhood.

My truck needed a ground up rewire anyway, saved me a f ton of time.

I have a Nelson custom "stand alone" harness. I'm still in the installation phase so I cannot comment on the finished product so to speak....but its a quality harness. The leads are all well labeled, everythings shrink wrapped, with new correct connectors, and covered with that black nylon mesh protective covering. I've got one lead a little short but otherwise the fit has been great. Has several relays and a new add-on fuse panel. I worked a trade with him on something so I can't speak to costs, but he supplied my harness, e36(e38?) ecm and a 4L80e tcm, along w/intake, etc.

Do your own! Its to easy to pay $400-$500 for a harness. Putting a LQ9 in a 77 Silverado right now....Using the original 05 Escalade engine harness & fuse box, DONT cut the harness up....Leave it alone & tag what you need at the fuse box.

ill need to go to a junk yard and get an under dash harness.
with the obdii port on it im guessing it just plugs into the main harness??

Just get the OBDII port with about 6 inches of wire, You will have to wire a serial data wire going to the PCM, The grounds & power can be handled under the dash.

I did mine for about $100 pulled from junk yard and help from lt1 swap. I did the engine part while yhe motor was on a stand so i could rout everything how I wanted to,plus i moved coils to rear of heads snd routed some under the intake .when you look at mine you only see very few wires.

I am almost done with mine. It isn't hard but it is very time consuming. Take your time and do it right. I have my alt, tips, iac, and maf routed under the intake. I will take a picture tomorrow and show you what it looks like so far. I also turned my injector plugs toward the intake to hide the wires some.

I did the exact same thing as above with routing wires under the intake and turning the injectors around.

It's amazing how much turning the injectors inboard hides the injector harnesses isn't it.

I did it myself with Branden's site as a guide. Took about 2-3 days, but I did a lot of custom work as well. I also turned my injectors around, but I ran my MAF, TB, MAP, and knock sensors ontop of the manifold. I'm using the VORTEC cover, so it all disappears the same. I also re-routed everything so that the main harness bundle comes together at the rear of the driver's side valve cover, then disappears into the firewall. The vast majority of the wiring as well as the fuses, relays, ECM, and TAC are inside, under the dash. You can't really see any of it once it's hooked up. Trans wires run inside and to the trans/VSS through the hole in the floor for my B&M floor shifter.
I'll post pics in my build thread once I get it started.

I would like to see how yall routed the wires under the intake before I pull my engine and start the swap. I hope I have my harness done correctly, I used the lt1 swap site so it should be close I hope.

Honestly, you don't gain much by going under the intake as oppsed to going on top like stock, unless you are not going to use the VORTEC cover. With the cover in place, you won't see the wires routed on top. I did mine this way, and it is still super clean.
But...if you must go under the intake, there is a ton of room. there are 2 foam inserts stuffed under there from the factory, so it doesn't look like much, but with them out, there is 2-3 inchees of room to work with.

I'll snap a few pics when I get home and post them tonight.

Here's the intake with the foam removed. Plenty of room for wires if you want to go this route.

well for my swap my engine is out of a 2000 model truck. so i guess i could go an get a under hood fuse panel from a junk yard?

im not sure if i can handle doing this alone but money is a big issue. and i cant really drop 4 to 500$ on getting some fancy harness.

if i add cam headers etc im already short on funds then need my tune heh.
going to be a long time to get this going heh

Get a 99-02 truck fuse box, Get the Grey, & Red bolt-on connectors, Cut the wires at about 6 inches, most will be removed later.

There is a Black sealed stand alone connector under the fuse box (arrow) That you need also.

Get this & it will be EASY, I will post diagram & tell you what to do when you get the parts.

will the grey and red bolt on connectors be with the harness or on the cab ?

The Grey & Red connectors bolt to the bottem of the underhood fuse block.

Here some drawings to help, Cut where the arrows are. Just leave the Grey & Red connecters bolted up to the fuse block, These connectors are part of the body harness.
