how may DD's and what makes you do it?

The title kind of says it all I think. I had a VERY nice Chevelle that I never drove, and told myself that the next old ride I own I will drive or not own it! I drive my 69 almost every day to work and back and where ever I need to go. I will admit to having a small circle of where I need to go. It was 50 here today, and drove my Blazer 20 miles just cause I could! SO, WHAT MAKES YA DO IT?

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

My burb is my DD/kid hauler/hockey gear transport/toy hauler. I drive it every singe day. I make a 150 mile round trip once a week for hockey and drive all over town every day.
It is a simple truck, no power steering or power brakes, no silly smog crap either. Just a nice mild 350cu that gets us from place to place in style and quickly.

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

I have two drivers.

My '71 C-10 lwb stepper I drive at least once a week to visit relatives in a small town not far (5 miles) away.

The '67 C-10 swb stepper is used around the farm to haul stuff, it has a l6 250 with a compound 4 speed.

I am an old guy so to speak and driving my old trucks instead of my newer '92 reminds me of the old days and many good memories.

When I drive them I have a different frame of mind and enjoy the drive and am not in a hurry.

I guess it may be an old guy thing.

I tell my self the same thing every day, why do I own a garage ornament? I try to drive as much as possible but I dont, I might drive it once or twice a week at most.

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

I drive my truck everyday, I think new cars are boring and ugly for the most part. All the mechanicals are dialed in and reliable on my truck but the body is unrestored so it's a lot easier to do it everyday without worrying or feeling guilty.

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

I would love to drive mine everyday and I did when I drove my 83. It drove me crazy, every rattle, creak, vibration, it was no fun. My father always told me never rely on you project as a DD. I could not do this when I was younger because I could not afford to have both. Now I do, I have a new truck that doesn't drive me crazy because I don't care about it and I have my wagon and my 71 that don't drive me crazy because I drive them once or twice a week. Its worked for me. I drive them hard when I drive them, but I wouldn't be happy with them as daily drivers.

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

Mine doesn't have rattles or anything that spooks me outa driving it. I guess I got lucky. Aside from my loud a$$ exhaust its a pretty chill quiet ride.

I drive my '67 stepper everyday. Unless your vehicle is worth mega $$$'s, fix it up and drive the sucker. I love the complements I get while I drive around, makes it worth all of th effort and wear and tear on my truck!

Don

By the way, nice setup Hayson!!! (drooooollllll)

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

I cruise the 68 whenever it's not crappy out, couple times a week. I drove it every day last week. If it got better mileage I might drive it more.
Helped a buddy move today, so it was a win-win. Drove the truck and got free pizza & beer.
One very nice thing about a longbed, you can actually use it.

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

When I get mine fixed, it will be a DD worktruck, do it all kinda vehicle. Seems when I was growing up that's what a truck was for, I haven't changed my opinion any. I figure mine's lasted since 67 being used as a truck, why stop now and what ever breaks or rust out can be fixed again!

I drive one of mine almost every day during good weather.(mostly the White '67) I try not to drive them in the winter when the roads are bad, they just use way too much salt and calcium chloride around here...

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

I drive my '71 when ever I need to go somewhere here in town for right now. I still have yet to get it above 40mph. I'm still shaking the old girl down. I still don't drive her at night, the gauge lights still don't work yet, but soon I drive her everywhere.

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

they were built to be driven, and nothing I own is worth so much that it needs to be hidden in a garage.
I also like being 'that guy' with the cool old trucks, and I NEVER like blending into the crowd. As soon as someone becomes lost in the general public, they lose part of their identity.

Amen to that !! Before every snow storm the Maine DOT hauls a trailer of liquid calcium and sprays the road so the snow won't stick. They stopped using sand 5 years ago because of the cleanup and use salt exclusively now. That is why I don't use mine as a DD I want to have something left for my grandchildren.

truth be told you do more damage by letting a car sit than if you drive it daily

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

I daily drive my 68 and it reminds me of all the stuff I still need to do. If I don't drive it then it will rot. It is overwhelming sometimes since the fix it list is long but I enjoy every little thing I fix. The only time I don't drive it is when it is broke or if I am driving more than 1 other person.

Re: how may DD's and what makes you do it?

DRIVE 'EM!!! I have driven my 70 every day since I got it 9 years ago. It may not be much to look at, but it gets me where I'm goin, and it has been paid for since day one. And I can actually repair it myself without a computer or special tools when something breaks. It has rattles, squeaks, and whistles but I wouldn't want to drive anything else!
