Sb 327 question...

This may sound like a stupid question but that never stops me. Will a flexplate for a 350 work on a 327. I was told that the flexplate on the 327 might be balanced differently. Anyhelp would be appreciated. I just bought a rebuilt 700r4 and am trying to get it together.

Re: Sb 327 question...

The 327 may show balance marks on the vibration damper, but it's an internally balanced motor requiring a neutral balance flywheel or flexplate.

The 400 small block Chevy requires the external balanced flexplate. A quick catalog check also indicates the 1986-97 sbc with the one piece crank seal is also external balance.

You just need to have the right diameter for the starter/torque converter. They come in two sizes, 153 tooth and 168 tooth. If the flexplate that came with the trans was behind a 1985 or earlier 350 with the 2 piece rear seal, it will also work on the 327. If it was on a 1986 or newer 350 it's externally balanced and the wrong one for the 327.
