In 67 there was no emissions stuff and that is why there are no holes and the script letters for 67 and below valve covers.......

No emissions stuff in '67? You're in California. I can guarantee you that CA had emissions stuff. They had PCV valves before the rest of the nation. I belive there was a plan to retrofit cars back to '55, with a PCV system to eliminate the road draft tube.

Why do you say that there was no emissions stuff on that '67 engine?

I am guessing someone added that. All the air cleaners i have seen of that style had no holes. I assume if you are running those valve covers you still have the down draft tube?

if not, you will have oil leaks galore. by the way, cali started emissions crap in 1966-smog pumps etc.

you are right about one thing i need the pcv valve other wise it will blow my gaskets and seals and there fore i can have the leaking

chevy did it why cant i just find out where everything goes and copy it my engine should match this one.. i dont see any holes in those air cleaners or valve covers do you guys?? if i am being a stupid teenager that doesnt understand this then we will call it even and this thread will be done

Re: 67 air cleaner what is this hole for???? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

The hole in your air cleaner would go to the valve cover. As i say, i think someone added that. Now if this is the setup you are going with on your 69 engine, you may run into problems. You will have to have the downdraft tube. I am not sure if the provision is there on a 69 block. I think you are going to have problems mixing and matching.

I should add, the engine pictured i would guess to be late 50s, early 60s...

This is correct...for years and years, anything 66-up had to have an emissions inspection, until they started the 30 yr rolling exemption (which is now frozen at 1975)

Listen to what this member is telling you.^^^
I don't know what size engine you are running,... but the original engine should have had a "down draft tube".

BTW, that photo of the SBC is pre 67, since it has front motor mounts.
I'm guessing late 50's early 60's.

Also, it has a road draft tube.

Re: 67 air cleaner what is this hole for???? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

I don't know when the actual road draft tubes were eliminated from small blocks (62?) but fittings like the one I have pictured were placed in the blocks so that a hose could be used to vent the crankcase to the intake manifold or base of the carb. This is on a 61-64 283 block, but my 64 327 block has it also. I think small journal 327 blocks had it through early 68.

Re: 67 air cleaner what is this hole for???? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

That's an old 283 I pulled from a 67 BelAir wagon I bought a few years ago out of Vegas. It
was obviously a replacement as it is a 61-64 casting. I don't want to throw it out because most of them have probably been scrapped. However, I am going to need that engine stand pretty soon so it will just have to go. I sold the wagon to a Buddy of mine after putting a 327 in it (year correct) and going through the mechanicals. It was a factory V8, three on the tree with AC, PS and PB. Wish I had kept it - it was absolutely rock solid.

Re: 67 air cleaner what is this hole for???? THANKS IN ADVANCE!!!

My moms 67 Caprice 327/400 auto 4 barrel stock fully loaded came with that same set up, the fitting that rsavage is showing. It had no PVC still have the valve covers hangging on the wall, no holes. Wish I still had that motor and trans set up. My 67 283/3 on the tree also has the same set up. But the funny thing is my 67 straight 6 250 was 3 on tree but now 350 auto has the PVC. On both the V8's a rubber line come's from off the bottom of the carb to the fitting (like in rsavage pic's) on the top rear of the manifold. With the 6cyl it's from the PVC with a rubber hose to the top of the intake manifold. And as far as I can remember and may think the breather for the back pressure was through the cap on the tube on the front of the manifold were you put the new or added oil when there's no PVC. I think the down draft tube was some kind of blow by that spits some oil and smoke(EPA no no). So to capture that mess they made the set up with that fitting going to the bottom of the carb to re cycle the waste but it globbed the motor. Somewhere from there it seems they went with the PVC and going though the air filter to stop the globs and still recycle Just what I think. Nick

Back in the day, engine venting was real primitive. The early breathers were just a tube so the crankcase pressure could equalize with the outside. Then came the road draft tubes, the idea being that as the car or truck moved along, the draft tube at the back of the engine would create a draft to suck air in through the front.
Here are some pics of the original small block road draft tube
http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/sh...hp?tid/178987/
Then, in the mid 60's, some states (California) started requiring something a little cleaner, and PCV was invented. As someone stated, trucks may have not been required to have it until a few years after cars.
But, we all know how easily Chevy car and truck engines and parts can be swapped around. I think the air cleaner the original poster showed is a 65-67 car air cleaner.

I personally don't like to think of the PCV system as an emissions system, but as an engine cleaning system. It basically keeps the air inside the crank case clean, which helps to keeps contaminates out of the oil.
