292 distributor
I'm putting a 292 back in my '64. It had a 194 when I bought it. I'm trying to decide which distributor to use. I have a new HEI I can use, but I'm trying to stay original. I have the original distributor from the 194 (1110293), a distributor from a '66 292 (1110364) that looks like it may have been rebuilt, and a distributor that came from a 230 according to the part number (1110280). According to the shop manual, these all have different advance curves. According to the parts books, not many parts were interchangeable between them. New and rebuilt distributors are all lumped together under one part number. I'm just wondering how much difference the advance curves will make. Does anyone have good specs for these distributors or a parts source? I'd like to keep this thing as close to original specs as possible.

Re: 292 distributor
The rebuilt 292 distributor would seem to fit the bill best.
If you let the truck sit months at a time the hei is way better than points. The 292 has a smaller rpm range than the smaller motors and a slower rate of increase, especially in a truck.. I would guess the centrifical portion has lighter spring resistance. However, curve tuning on an inline is getting into the finite . At that point, factory setups are only baseline tuning. To optimize for you elevation, climate and weight your going your own specific path. On a race track it probably matters. In a truck you are probably hard pressed to feel a difference. |

Re: 292 distributor
The 66 292 dist would match up the best. It didn't have emission controls on it & would be a good one to use. The HEI would be the best running one & would look right at home. I'm with you on keeping it original though. I have a 72 Super that is all original. I would love to have HEI on it but I don't want to modify it. It runs great with the points though.
