super m in a pickup

I have an old frame from a delivery truck that has been shortened and I want to put the cab of a late 40's chevy pickup on it and then I have been thinking of doing something completely off the wall. I want to put a Farmall super M engine in the frame and find a way to mate it with a SM465 4speed. How possible is this and has it been done before?

Cool! A 264 cube straight 4. Go to redpowermagazine.com and ytmag.com and look in the forums. I know people have mated V8's up to the farmall bell housing. Might find some info there. You know you will only have 40-60 HP eh? You can get much more than that but they won't last in a vehicle application. Keystone make a turbo setup for a stock engine and give you 80-90 HP. I pull a 52 Super M and 51 H in antique tractor pulls.

I know nothing about tractor engines but 90hp for all that assumed work??? Less than the stock 6.

Re: super m in a pickup

It will only turn 1450 at redline but with the 18 in. truck wheels and tires and 3.73 rears and 700r4 i could get 50mph safely

That's awesome!
I hate when others try to discourage you from trying the crazy, wacky, or insane. (but ultimately cool)

Do you know if you can get a bellhousing to fit the Super M?

I think you'd probably have to make your own bell housing, as most if the swap parts out there are designed to run V-8's in tractors, not tractor engines in front of newer trannies

I don't see how that could work. Either way you still won't have the right bolt patterns. I'd say just make a cardboard template of the engine, another of the tranny and match up the shaft centers on a piece of plate. Then just drill the plate for the desired bolt locations.

The adapter is the least of your worries though. You need to consider how you'll mount your starter, how to rig up a flex plate to the super m engine (if you want to run a 700r4) and how to keep the torque converter in the right location with the extra distance added by the adapter plate. And I'm sure there will be a hundred other little things that will annoy you along the way.

Re: super m in a pickup

I also wonder would it be easier to use a NV4500 instead of a 700r4 and the m is a 12inch clutch but would the bolt pattern of the flywheel match say an automotive 12in clutch

That's the part you'll have to figure out, but I doubt it will bolt right up. Things rarely go that smooth. The NV4500 would be cool, but that's a lot of money too. Be prepared to drop $1k on that, as they're really popular and getting hard to find since New Venture stopped making them.
