Question Need help with rear end

So here is the deal I have a 2wd 1967 Gmc stepside long bed. Now this truck I believe has a 10 bolt dana 44 spicer rear. The ring gear has gone out of it. It is a straight six with the 3 speed w/ granny gear as well. Total 4 speed just so there is no confusion. Now the problem I am having is I just can not find parts for this at all. Every were I have looked says they do not fit my model of truck. Can any one tell me were to find a total rebuild kit, Pinion gear and u joints for this rear end. Any help would be great. Thank you.

Re: Need help with rear end

1 you need to be sure as to what rear axle you have. you keep telling people ten bolt and you are just going to confuse the hell out of every one.

you 4 possible options from stock.
a 12 bolt gm
a eaton o33, not likely
a d44
a d60, again not likely

it would help alot if you post a pic, saves alot of b.s and extra posts.

Re: Need help with rear end

Unfortunately I do not have the ability to get a pic right now as my truck is in storage over an hour away. I am pretty sure it is a dana 44. It is a 10 bolt for sure for I have counted and know it is. From the research I have done on the truck and the rear end it was a dana 44 spicer rear. I just can't find parts for the dana 44 spicer any were or any were that is compatable with that year and model of the dana 44s. I know come of the old jeeps have the same front and rear ends in them. I guess I'll have to wait and post pics so I can figure out what it is for sure and then find out were to get the parts. Thanks for the help. If some one knows were to get parts for a 67 danna 44 spicer 10 bolt please let me know.

Re: Need help with rear end

What 2tonoffun is telling you is that a "10 Bolt" is a GM10 bolt and a Dana 44 is not. The bolts on the cover have noting to do with it.

You very well could have a Dana44. The D44s normally came in the Blazer/Jimmy. Do you have coil springs or leave springs? Normally the D44 will be setup for leaf springs because most Blazers were 4X4s. Modifications could have been made.

Somewhere on the webbing of the diff housing there will be a D44 if it is a Dana 44 or a D60 if it is a Dana60. Yes, there were 6 lug D60s, I have one. The parts store cannot find the D60 6lug reference either.

As for parts, your local auto parts store is not going to be much help. Look at Randy's Ring, a 4X4 shop, or just do a search for Dana 44. If you can get the numbers stamped into the axle tubes, it will help.

Re: Need help with rear end

I have a 1967 GMC 2wd with rear leaf springs and a Dana 44. This was a standard combination for 67 GMC's with leaf springs and 6 cyl engines. I am still running the original dana 44 dff but I have done a lot of research trying to decide whether to junk it or rebuild it with posi and disk brakes. The good news is these units are still popular with the 4x4 crowd and can be built up pretty strong as a daily driver. My unit has a 19 spline axle which should be the same for yours, but the only way to be sure is by removing the axle and counting the splines. There are tons of ring gear options (Richmond, etc) just make sure you are looking at a rear ring & pinion set and not a front set which is reversed. Auburn makes a posi unit (AG 542085-PRO), and disk brake kits are the same as the small tube Ford 9 inch disk brake kits. I estimated it would cost me about $300 more to upgrade my Dana 44 (ring&pinion, posi, disk brakes) than just swapping it for an S10 4x4 diff (which is about the same width) that already has all this stuff.

X2 - I have a Dana in my Longhorn and it needs drums - 13" drums. If I do anything, I'll swap out the whole rear end for something a little more common.

Re: Need help with rear end

Has to be a Dana 60 in a 1 ton, a Dana 44 is pretty weak for that application.

Re: Need help with rear end

corperate/HO72 is all that came in them originally. The D60 in the 3/4 ton trucks was pretty lame. I have 2 broken ones in my garage right now.
