Turn signal ?s
My 63 GMC has factory turn signals but they don't cancel when I turn. Are they suppose to? If not, is there some way to make them self-cancel?
This truck is really showing me just how little I know about old vehicles.

Re: Turn signal ?s
Yes, they're supposed to cancel. Could be a couple things, but you may need a new switch behind the steering wheel.

Re: Turn signal ?s
I'm not sure if they are still available, but you used to be able to buy the plastic 'C' shaped part of the turn signal switch that the handle attaches to. This is what has the cancellation mechanism on it. They just get fatigued and brittle and break off. You might check with some of the aftermarket suppliers.....I haven't bought one in several years.

Re: Turn signal ?s
It's part number 36-0603 at LMC but I wouldn't buy one until you take the wheel off and verify that's your problem.

Re: Turn signal ?s
Thanks guys! I'm supposed to get my air cleaner back from powder coating today so I will probably head out to my buddy's house and do some tinkering on the truck. How does the horn button come off? From the diagrams I've seen it looks like it is held in by friction to a rubber ring.

Re: Turn signal ?s
The horn button just pulls off. Then you will have to remove the steering wheel to get to the turn signal switch. You'll need a steering wheel puller for that.

Re: Turn signal ?s
I was able to pick one up at NAPA auto parts about a month ago. I would try them before paying shipping.

Re: Turn signal ?s
I tried replacing the turnsignal cam today but when I tried to remove the old one it had wires from the switch harnes attached to it with rivets and some sort of contacts on them. The replacement part doesn't have any way to attach the wires. I don't think the wires will even come off of the original part. I got the cam listed for a 63, should I try one from a different year.

Re: Turn signal ?s
I can't find a part for the GMC, would an entire switch assembly for a 63 chevy work or is the wiring different?

Re: Turn signal ?s
You might check out the turn signal assembly for a '62 Chevy. It's been my experience that sometimes GMC used parts from a year or two older Chevy.

Re: Turn signal ?s
The pictures I've seen of 62 switches look completely different.
