keep bumper?

what do you guy's thank? restoring the truck close to org. it was a search and rescue truck. the bumper is home built and the winch is pto driven. it shows a lot of history and looks like it was built with a torch and a stick welder. I think i should keep it? this isn't going to be a show 100 point just a good looking driver. so yes or no?

Re: keep bumper?

Will it see any off-road duty, or strictly street? If street, I'd pull it off and try to sell it. But if you'll ever get it off the pavement and working like it seems to have been built for, I'd definitely keep it.

Re: keep bumper?

Not trying to highjack your thread 61K10 but what do you have for a rear bumper? I would like to mount a chrome bumper on my 62 K10 short fleetside (the one all the vendors sell) but I'm not sure the brackets will mount up. Not sure if there's room for the brackets with spring mounts and the crossmember so close to the end of the frame. I didn't see anything in the Factory Assembly Manual for mounting a rear bumper on a K model....

Re: keep bumper?

truck had a home built like the front and was bolted to the outside of the frame. i bought a barden and it came off a 2wd and the mounting is all wrong as the frame's were wider. to use it i have to make new mounts. all so the rear bed support pads on the frame were modded as the bumper bolts were where the perches were riveted on. don't know either how the stock ones were mounted. maybe someone will post up. here is a pic of my home built one. if you find out any info on this, post up--thanks

Re: keep bumper?

I got another vote to keep it looks good and right at home on your 4x4 truck. Sounds like a fun project have a blast working on it.

Question Re: keep bumper?

Wh makes you say it's a "home-built"? That bumper looks to be an exact copy of an early Ramsey from the 60's / 70's. It might even be an early Warn. I guess if you can tell it was home-built by the fabricaton methods, ... they did a pretty good job imitating the popular bumpers of the day back then.

If you keep it, I would eventually paint it the same color as the truck so it 'blends in' a little better.

Re: keep bumper?

I vote keep it..or...if you restore the truck real nice and feel it looks too crudely made, bulky,or whatever, you could fab up a more attractive one that still appears as from that period. Just another option.I truly think the winch bumper/winch are right for an early 4wd. A pretty stock bumper would take away an edge that the winch gives it. Even for show, seeing a truck with purpose stands out from pretty chromed beauties.

Thumbs up Re: keep bumper?

I agree w/ special-k on that.

Here's one style that I always admired for the way it follows the 'lines' of this period truck.

Re: keep bumper?

i will be keeping it for sure, might even keep the rear as it matches the front kinda. takes 2 people to lift the back one, can only imagine how much the front one weighs. and yes it is home built for sure, and it's welded on. can't find any name on the winch. hopefully when i take it out of the bumper i will find some markings. looks military and pto driven?

Re: keep bumper?

I'm not such a fan. I think the PTO driven winch is cool, (Do you have any pictures of the setup from the trans to the winch?) but the bumper looks like a fat lip to me. Maybe if you spruced it up and clean up the winch area it might look a little better... just my opinion. But at the same time i prefer function over form. So if its a useful thing, keep it.

Re: keep bumper?

yes it's ugly but, isn't ugly in? haha--i have some alum. diamond plate, was thanking of putting that on top and a new fair-lead. can take a pic of the pto, it's just a 1" shaft from the trans (420) to the winch. front u-joint is broke and the shaft is bent. possible contact with front axle. this was a search and rescue truck and they used for sure.
