NP203 Issue

It is a 79 NP203 mated to a th350 the issue is when in lock it will pop out of lock either high or low with any type of medium or heavy acceleration and it is particularly annoying considering my front driveshaft is out and it not having a part time kit please tell me it is something small I would like to be able to open up my new motor or even pass a car without it popping out of gear

I would research running a 203 with no front driveshaft. Looks like it causes excessive wear in the transfer case.

Re: NP203 Issue

I looked on my own and came up with a couple possible solutions.
  • Adjust transfer case shifter linkage
  • Rachet strap the shifter all the way forward or back

I have a sneaky feeling that it might be the linkage or the shifter because it is very stiff shifting through the gears I think I will take the shifter assembly out to clean and lube it and I will adjust the linkage then. ratchet strap It would work though

Re: NP203 Issue

203 linkage is dog breath when they get old. Either will not fully engage and pop out or will not come out and get stuck between gears. I got tired of crawling under mine and figured out an easy way to convert to twin stick. Took me 3 hours including time to take the pictures for the thread. Just takes a hack saw, die grinder and welder. http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...d.php?t=360447

And I know 203 is the ugly step sister, but I got good use out of mine, have a good spare and do not want to change just to change until I break both or them. With a shaft part time kit the wear issues are minimized.

There is a 3rd solution. Use the NP203 as the boat anchor it is and find a NP205.
