Two sets of mufflers?? Will it work?

My 69 GMC 1/2 ton I am attempting to get on the raod is quite loud and I would like to make it quieter for driving around town.

The truck has a 350 with header and dual exhaust. Both collector gaskets were leaking and fixing them has made it quieter, but still loud.

The exhaust systems seems to be in good shape, no holes and covered in surface rust.

It has mufflers, but what I would call blue bottles or cherry bombs. The mufflers are 17 inches long and about 3.5 or 4 inches in diameter. I think they were meant to flow and make noise.

The mufflers are located over the rear axle.

What I am wondering about is cutting the pipes in front of the current mufflers and installing a second set of mufflers. Therefore running two mufflers on each side.

Will this harm anything?

Any suggestions?
