I know I have seen this covered somewhere but I can't find the tread. I have a '66 LWB that already had a sbc & th350 installed when I got it. I noticed that there is a very intrusive crossmember below where the trans meets the engine that from what I've read was for rear engine mounts for an I6. Did V8 trucks have this crossmember? Have you guys removed this crossmember? If so, is it just a matter of grinding the rivets off? If it doesn't need to be there, I want it gone.

I just removed mine last night.....it supported the stock 3-speed bellhousing an tranny.

About to post pics in my thread.

I did not know you could even get a auto tranny to clear that thing. I cut mine out while I was swapping from the 3spd to an auto

i cut mine out it was in the way when i installed a small block and a turbo 400.

Make it go away if you're keeping the automatic - mine had a 350/350 in place over that crossmember when I got it, but I had to cut it out to fit the big block; get a real automatic crossmember for under the tail of the trans. You'll have to figure out a plan for the e-brake cable connection also.

I bought a brand new cross member for less than 80 bucks I do believe

Thanks everyone! I'm going to have at it with the grinder and see if I can remove the crossmember. I'll take a look at your build thread for some removal tips chief.

yea i have that in my truck. it was the cross member for the four speed i pulled. im going with a auto but if i can fit a th350 in without taking it out ill do that incase i replace the four speed later.
