Best muffler
Hi there
do anyone remmember the muffler that was used for the 454 engine? I know that it has a great sound especially for 1978-1979. I have a 8.1 big engine 2001 and I love to play with the exhaust system and improve it to the most powerful performance I can ANY ADVICE My second question is about the those numbers 454 , 350 what do they mean by them .......... the horsepower or the cubic inch if the cubic inch how horsepower do they have originally? because in my truck it shows 496 cubic inch and around 340 horsepower so when we compare between them which one would be more powerful? |

Re: Best muffler
Im really not sure what your getting at with the muffler question.
the second question Im a bit confused also. a 454 Chevy is 454 cubic inches,an 8.1..or 8100 is metric for 496...or 496 cubic inches. a 350 is 350 cubic inches. you could have a 454 that makes 350 horse power, or a 350 that makes 350 horse power.. or a 496 that makes 350 horse power, or a 350 that make 496 horse power..& so on & so on. My 454 was rated at 245 horse power, some are rated at 360 horse power.

Re: Best muffler
Thanks for your replay
So there is no relationship between the cubic inch and the horse power? if this 8.1 belongs to you how would you upgrade it? Some ideas My first question is about the best muffler I can put for my truck that gives more power? "so I am caring about the power more than the sound" Thanks |

Re: Best muffler
anything that more free flow is good but dont go very large on the exhaust pipe diameter. From what ive been told the large the pipe the less back pressure. With less pressure ur torque is lost so with a stock 454 i say if ur running 500 hp then 3 inch, with stock 454 running around 2-3 hundred hp then 2 1/2 inches.
So is say flowmaster with 2 1/2 exaust system they make a muffler that not as loud and its just as good but i dont remember the name. Know for engine you grades. What did the engine come from orginially car or truck. Reason trucks have a lower compression as well as RVs so the have more torque to pull but if you want more hp then you will want what a car 454 has and that higher comression.

Srubydo1986
Thanks for the suggestions. I have this engine on a silverado 2500HD singal cap and 6 speed manual trans 4*4 What I will do is probably: (I have the KN filter already) 1- Add a dual exhuast pipe and muffler with headers (without changing the pipes diameters) 2- do computer programmer. it has orginally up to 340 horse power and I guess after adding the last it might go up to 400 hp if we count it roughly 10-15 for the KNfilter around 30 for the computer programmer 15-20 for the exhuast system improvment and the headers. Do you have guys any other suggestions? |

Re: Best muffler
You are on the 73-87 board . There is a board for 99 up trucks and they may have a little more experience with the 8.1L engines in the newer trucks and may be able to give you a little better idea of what sounds good . Flowmaster or Magnaflow make mufflers that sound good and are pretty freeflowing . I know that Flowmaster has a line of BigBlock mufflers , at least thats what they used to call them . Frank

Re: Best muffler
I have a dual outlet Flowmaster Super 40 on my late model daily driver - it sounds good and not too loud -- it sounds about like a new Corvette --- my outlet pipes are 2 1/2" and i have them dumped out the side , Lightning style.
If you go with a single outlet muffler, use at least a 3" pipe with that big of a motor. I would be very surprised if you noticed any gain in power "seat of the pants" with any aftermarket muffler system because the bulk of the restriction is in front of the cats, but it might pick up a few hp's on paper with a well engineered Magnaflow or Flowmaster system |
