Ok I know a lot of the old wires in my factory harness will not be used ... When wiring up for my HEI distributor ..... So I made a little video of my wiring harness ... I need someone to tell me which wires to keep and which ones to cut off..... I have looked at these drawings of wiring diagrams and I just get more confused.... Someone please help me....

There are some good wiring diagrams here, just use the search function. I used the diagrams with no trouble at all. I even re pinned part of my harness to make the internal regulator alternator work and look a lot cleaner. The wiring diagrams on this site are second to none.

Yellow wire is a resistor wire for the point style ignition. If you are running an HEI, you do not need it. You do need to make sure you have battery voltage to the distributor with an HEI.

The purple wire goes to the "s" terminal on the starter. It is what gives the starter the signal when you turn the key to the start position. If you have your neutral safety switch hooked up correctly, it will pass through it on the way from the ignition switch to the starter.

The green wire is for your factory temp sender which is normally located in the left cylinder head between #1 and #3 cylinder. If you have a factory temp gauge, you will need that wire.

Those are the ones I can tell right away, not sure on the rest but maybe for AC and blower motor wiring.

I just noticed your blower motor is wired OK. Did this truck have a "warning light" cluster? The one with the round connector and black wire may be for the oil pressure sending unit which you will not need if you are running a mechanical oil pressure gauge.

Not sure about the wires for changing to an HEI but can I suggest something? Remove the wire ties from the plug wires and use a regular spark plug wire separator looms. The plug wires should not be touching each other.

Take it just one wire at a time. Unwrap the harness and inspect the wires for damage. Then trace each wire following the schematic. Print out the schematic and hold it up to your actual harness if you need to. Try to understand the schematic using your harness as a guide. That's the first place to start. Everything else is making sure you have the right connector for what it needs to connect to. If you don't understand the schematic it will be near impossible to help you over the computer to diagnose and modify the harness.
