Need Ideas With Gas Tank
I'm wanting to put a tank under the bed and all the links I have found were around 2 years old. I'm looking for people who have already relocated their tank with any oem tank so I can get some pics and tips on install. I'm wanting to do something with an external fuel pump. Also any new ideas on a filler location.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
I'm doing mine now, using a American Classic tank kit, and hiding the filler behind the tail light. Search "Custom fuel filler", and you'll get a few ideas. There is also a good post in FAQ.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
I looked in the faq and got a few ideas. There was a mention about a 70 mustang tank has anyone done this?

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
I am in the same process but didn't like the prices of some of the aftermarket tanks. I know a tank manufacturer and have done some consulting work for them in the past, so I sent them a sketch a couple of days ago with dimensions to see what they could do. So far it looks promising. I will let you know how it proceeds. I hope to have quotes back from them this week. It should be bolt on.
I have wood bed floor and am installing a flip up stainless steel access cover in the bed with the cap on the tank below that. |

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
On the filler I was thinking of getting a door assembely off of a truck at the junk yard and cutting a round opening in the bed close to the tailgate and welding the cut out part to the top of the door so it still looks almost like it wasnt there. But not 100% sure yet on that.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
After putting a plastic tank in numberone son's (72afr), I would steer clear. Get a steel one.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
I'll be starting my own tank relocation in a month or so. So once you guys get all the problems all ironed out, it'll be smooth sailing for me.
So far, the least expensive 21 gallon steel relocation kit I've seen is LMCtruck. Their Fall 2006 catalogue (Page 108) says the whole kit incl tank, sending unit, straps, is $199 plus about $30 for shipping from Kansas to RI. Checked GMC Paul's website and the kit's listed for about $30 more, but I'll call them before buying to offer them 1st crack.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
Here's an idea............ Go find a 2Wheel drive Blazer and tell the folks you'd really like to check out the gas tank. Tell them why. I bet they will let you check it out. Take a tape measure. I relocated my tank back in the early 90's before the computer was invented. laying under the wifes Blazer I got the idea of using a Blazer tank on my 67 4x4. Went to the junk yard and came home with all the cross members, tank, skid plate, fill tube and the straps for about 60 bucks. Looking at a 4x4 blazer will also work. Check out the distance from the top of the tank to the floor pan. See how much it hangs down under the frame. The newer frames and the older frames are not that much different..................

Mudder
What year range should I stay in when looking. I'm going to try it like you did first befor I save up all that cash for a new kit. I'm kind of strapped for cash but want to get this done.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
I used a 73 Suburban gas tank. It hangs down a bit more but it also holds 25 gals. I just had to rotate the filler neck on it 90* to come out the side, but one could easily not do that and plumb it through the floor.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
Good thing to remember is that different years Blazers Burbs had different size tanks. I think that my daughters Blazer had about a 17 gal tank and mine from a 85 Blazer has a 31/33 gal tank. You will need to research the size of tanks for the diffent years. If i's a 2wheel drive truck I would think the smaller tank would be better fit.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
I have a 21 gallon Blazer style poly tank w/sending unit and straps for my SWB. I wish I would have went with a bolt/in SS or aluminum tank now that I am further into my restore. I bought the kit for $225 and will sell for less and ship if you are interested.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
What ever you do, don't do it like this...
This is not my truck (just wish it was). This was scanned from a magazine. It's called "Sic Trick" and lives in N. Cali. Another board member pointed out just how low this thing sits. Looks like a major insurance claim just waiting to happen. Just my $0.02.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
I haven't done it yet, but it'll be on the outside of the bed. I hope it will come out as clean as this one did.

Re: Need Ideas With Gas Tank
Id recomend spending the extra money on an aluminum or stainless tank that mounts flush with the frame rails on the top side. Im in the process of doing this right now with a new steel repop blazer tank supposed to be a conversion kit. but they dont mention that you have to cut the crossbrace under the bed all the way across be cause the tank sticks above the frame about 2 inches. and the filler points directly were the bolt is supposed to go through the bed to frame. if you want more info or pics on my install let me know dont want butt in
