Post exhaust question

My current exhaust has long tub headers to flowmasters then out the back. It's a new and clean set up that came on the truck. I don't have a cross over H or X pipe configuration on the exhaust. I know there's horsepower there if I put one on. Can I just use the same size exhaust piping and weld in my own H pipe configuration? Do I need to do this at a certain distance from the headers? Or do you think this is just a crazy idea?

Re: exhaust question

From my understanding it's all guessing and dyno time. Also depends on youre motor setup, probably to much work with not enough end results to worry about it.

Re: exhaust question

ttt...
I'm interested in this too. Exhaust configurations are not my most knowledgeable area (haven't figured out yet what area is though...).

Can we get additional input to this question?

Re: exhaust question

FWIW

The only "h" pipes i've seen were directly after the headers.

I've only seen 1 actual "X" pipe set-up. It was for high RPM performance & a couple feet back from the end of the headers.

Re: exhaust question

H- and X- pipes don't add significant HP unless the engine is pretty warm. They do calm the engine note down quite a bit as they cut the resonance frequency of the exhaust by 1/2.

I'd give it a miss unless you're looking to make a quieter exhaust.

Re: exhaust question

the true way to figure out where the H pipe belongs is to spray paint a line down the side of each exhaust pipe, take the truck out and run it pretty hard, lift it up and look for the "hot spot" in the paint-thats where the H should be but in the real world that usually ends up in a crappy spot, like under the transmission. X pipes work on the "scavenger effect" which is better than the H pipe according to dyno tests.

I remember watching qualifying on TV for the 1995 Daytona 500 and, Yes, the Morgan-McClure cars sounded MEAN. The pitch was sooo different than all the other team's cars. Higher pitch. Of course this was at WOT. Guess most all the Cup teams caught onto thier little secret so enough, and they all sound the same again.
