So, how can you tell if it is a 71 or 2 just by driving by it? I ask because I have a 71 and it looks the same. Well, before the 69 clip was put on it.

This is from thirdstreettito's post. He said he was driving by and saw a 72. Is it the side markers that gives it away?

nope, the mirror inside the cab is glued to the windshield instead of mounted to the cab.

well that's what i thought... the rear view on the window.. but my 71 is the same way. The VIN is a 71.

The wierd thing is that I also have doors with the little screw under the vent window. Isn't that a 72 thing also?

are you sure the cab is original?
Look where the mirror is supposed to be. If it is a real 71, there will be a raised pad stamped in the sheet metal. 71 was the ONLY year for that.

....besides, mirrors can be attached to the windshield AND the markers that were shown on the first truck are not truck side markers.

those are truck marker lights. They were part of the CST package in 69 and 70, and cheyenne and cheyenne super for 71 and 72.

the cab must have been changed at some point. I found some pics of the doors. This is before the 69 clip. the black doors w/ the trim stripes in the previous pics are the 69's.

Here is the screw hole.

No raised paid on the door. I know it's hard to see, but I know there isnt a pad.

I think the raised pad LHM is referring to would be above the windshield, inside the truck....

no pic. I'll have to look at lunch..... I am positive there is nothing there. So, it must be a 72 cab.

Could it posibly be a late 71. You know how they do it with modern production stuff.

The other difference between the '71 and '72 is the black strip around the grill is removed on the '72.

The problem is that these trucks are decades old and have interchangable parts between the years.

The black stripe was on my grill and i sanded it off.

Maybe it's a Texas thing. I have a '71, front disk brakes, '71 vin, titled in Texas as a '70. So, it's actually a '72 titled as a '71? What's the VIN say?

I have desifered the vin befor and it says it is a 71 but it also says it is a step side too. The motor designation is right..... 6 banger but it had a 350 when i got it.

the VIN won't tell you if it is a step side or a fleet side... only the model number will tell you that.
Build date does not matter. If it is title'd (and VIN'd) as a 72, then it is a 72. My burb was built 11/71, but it is a 72.

LMC is wrong.
Most places don't have the correct decode... to include some site by GM. (amazingly enough)
Here is the closest one I have found, and it is on this site.

The only parts that are wrong, and it's more of an obmission than flat out wrong, if it is a 72, then it will have an extra C in the begining, which stands for Chevrolet. The other part left out is on the serial number. It wasn't as simple as 100001 being the first one to roll off the line. Some plants had 2 assembly lines making the same model vehicles. Vehicles off assembly line #1 started with 100001 as stated in the link. Vehicles on line #2 started with 800001.
I have quite a bit of dated GM literature, and they all agree with what is said on the link above.

You may want to see if the VIN on the title, matches the VIN tag on the cab (also see if it is held on with the correct rosebud rivits) and that the numbers on the frame and SPID in the glove box all match one another.
I pretty much say no way that is a 71. It even has a 72 door panel on it.

And the tag on the door is held on w/ rivits. I will have to see my 69 and see what that has holding the tag. I don't think the 69 has a SPID either..

No wonder when someone walks up to it they say "it's a 72". I always say no it's a 71.

do you have a pic of the rivits Andy? They look like normal ones to me.
