I recently bought a 72 GMC SWB. It currently has a Chevrolet grille on it. The radiator core support is in terrible shape. I want to stay with the single headlight Chevy style grille, but I don't know which core support to buy. I have heard that I need to get an older 67-69 support. Or do I need a Chevy support for the 72?
Does anyone have any input or suggestions on this?

I have two headlights and I'd like to keep that set up, I'm just not sure of what year support to go with.

67-68 grill = 67-68 core support.
69-72 grill = 69-72 core support.
The difference is the headlight buckets and splash pan on 67-68's

What yr Chevy grille is in the truck now? Does your truck have a Chevy grille and fenders or only a only grille? From the factory, 68-72 GMC trucks use the same fenders as a 68 Chevrolet, so if it has the stock 72 GMC fenders on it now, the only Chevy grill that would fit the fenders would be a 68 Chevrolet. I believe this would also mean using the slanted 68 Chevy hood. 69-72 Chevrolets all use the same fender. 67-68 fenders interchange, but the 67 fender does not have the hole stamped for a blinker light. GMC grille supports are different than Chevrolets due to the headlight mounts. Hood releases are different from GMC and Chevrolet as well. Personally, I have 2 GMC's (71 and 72) and 3 Chevrolets (one 71 and two 72s). They are as they came from the factory to avoid all this kind of confusion. Bottom line, you need to have all the same make and yr radiator support, fender and grill for it all to work.

I agree w/ everything WIDESIDE72 said, good description. But, if you buy the '67 core support, you can easily modify it to accept all the front ends by simply spot welding the differant headlite buckets in. The '67 core support will have the square holes for the headlite adjusters, the GMC buckets are the same for both sides (just flop them over) or you can weld in the single headlite bucket from the chevy. They only have like 4-6 spot weld per bucket, and the buckets are out there, they never seem to rust badly

I have to admit that I do not know much about this truck. I just happened upon it while on vacation two weeks ago.....the price was right and I bought it on the spot.
I don't know what year the grill is and neither does the PO. He only had the truck for a year before he realized that he would not be able to start or finish the build on it.
The VIN decodes as a GMC.......it also matches the sticker on the glove box lid. The sticker indicates that it is a 1/2 ton and has leaf springs, but this one has trailing arms and coils. The rear view mirror hangs from the roof instead of being stuck to the window, which tells me that it is not a 72. It has a Chevy grill and tailgate......
I'm so confused........after I re-size some pics, I will post them to possibly get help with what I've got.

I have a 4 headlight core support that I was going to use. If you pull the dual headlight buckets off, the hole for a single headlight setup is there, You just need to make some holes for the headlight adjusters. You can get them new pretty cheap. I did not pay much for mine. I have a guy local who is an lmc dealer.

Given the hodge-podge of parts you've described being on your truck- it sounds like it might be a 71 GMC Cab on a chassis of unknown origin (check the VIN# on the frame under the DS door) with Chevy front clip and t-gate. Nonetheless, if you have a 67-68 Grille you'll need to use the '67-68 core support.

Pic number 2 is the hood release mechanicsm on this truck.

OK, just making sure we are comparing apples to apples and oranges to oranges. That mechanism could be mistaken for a core support, if looked at in an obscure way

you have a 69 or 70 chevy grill They are pretty much the exact same, so either or will work when describing it.
