Another engine swap question 400-305-454

I have a 72 C20 Cheyenne. Came with a BB 400 from factory and somewhere along the line some one installed an early 80s caburated 305. Some one is offering me for free a 3/4 ton 1982 silverado with a TBI 454 and 4 speed transmission. Truck hadn't been started in 10 years.

I am thinking about taking the truck and canabalizing the engine and transmission plus maybe A C parts for my truck.

Any thoughts on if the engine and transmission will bolt in?

Any one have any thoughts about this engine?

I'm considering just trying to sell the 8 2 and use the money to buy engine and transmission for 72 but I would save a bunch of money if I can swap engines out.

Thanks

i think the engine should bolt right in, as long as you stilll have the BBC engine stands,
if it has not been started in quite a long time , i would at least take a look at the bearings and replace all the gaskets while you have it out, no sense and putting it in just to have a head gasket blow or a nasty oil leak

Re: Another engine swap question 400-305-454

If it is an '82 it should come out mounts and all and bolt in. But an '82 is not a TBI 454, that didn't start until '87 I believe. Is it a '92 maybe? If so, the motor will work but the mounts may not. They did make suburbans and 1-tons in square body style until '91. Is the 4-speed a manual or is a 700R4 automatic?

The TBI 454 is not a real power house but is still pretty thirsty. The heads are not all that great for performance. I think you are much better off with a nice 350 or 383 myself. Even better, do an LS conversion.

Need more details on your donor truck.
