Odometer moves - Speedometer not Working

Trying to determine where the problem is with my speedometer not working first found a broken speedometer cable and replaced that. Still no luck so trying to figure out if it's the speedometer or the part on the tranny. While turning the cable with a drill the speedometer needle didn't move but noticed the odometer was turning. Is the speedometer head bad or what?

If your odometer advances mileage then your speedometer cable is engaging into the speedometer head. If the needle is not moving then the magnet has lost its charge or the shaft is come loose from the cup.

I can repair this for you if interested. You can also just buy a replacement speedometer head and replace it. Be careful buying used ones unless you can check them first. The drill method is OK but only gets you about 30 MPH.

Let me know
Tom

Re: Odometer moves - Speedometer not Working

Thank you for your help. I think I'm going to buy a new unit. Looks like LMC has the best deal. Thanks again.

SCHRUMGMC,

It sounds like you may have the same issue as LT102. Does your odometer advance (count up miles) when driving the truck? If it does and your speedometer needle does not move, then your speedometer needs to be repaired.

If the odometer does not count up mileage, then you need to make sure the cable is engaged into the tail shaft and the speedometer gears in the tail shaft are there and in good condition.

Hope this helps,
Tom

Re: Odometer moves - Speedometer not Working

My odometer and speedometer doesn't work, I'd question on how much it would cost to fix it

I would not even guess what the charge would be. It sounds to me like your speedometer cable is not turning. If you are not able to check yourself, then take the truck to a trans shop or an auto shop that you trust and have them check to see if the speedometer cable is turning all the way up to the speedometer head.

This should be a relatively simple test to see where your problem is.

Hope this helps,
Tom
