the cut the radio hole or not?

I have been contemplating a new radio purchase. I would like to go stock look, but these old radios look cheap to me, but cost 2-3 times what a good receiver does. Should I just shave the dash and get me a nice sony etc. or pay the steep price for one of those that fit my dash? Anyone have a lot of luck out of those no name brand retro look radios?

In my opinion, it depends on what look you're going for. If you want the truck to look more original, then one of the old radios would fit better. But if you don't care about that and just want some sound, slap a new style radio in it. I would go new style myself...but thats just me.

I want the truck to look semi stock on the inside, and I do not think I want to cut the dash, but the radios that fit the dash just do not appeal to me. I may go with an original and put something in the glove box. Thanks for the input everyone.

The glove box was going to be my recommendation, only down side is you have to reach across to use it, but this can be solved by a remote equipped unit, you just have to drive around with the glove box open lol.

since you are looking for opinions though I would buy an underdash plastic mount (or glovebox) and mount a basic DIN stereo into it, then you can have your tunes and make a decsion later on the metal cutting.

How can you say that? After all the money and time some put into their truck.

I'm with the no cut side especially if it's a stock truck that hasn't been modified. Now, if it has been bagged, different seats, steering wheel and generally made into a more modern vehicle, than go for it.

Personally, I like the original look since I'm of that era.

I CUT mine and can not be happier with the radio I put in there. I can guarantee you that the value in my truck did not go down. Those aftermarket two knob radios are "JUNK" I have had at least three of them and not one of them lasted longer than a month or so before they stopped working. Reason I cut my dash from the get go and put a quality unit in there....
Also I had the pleasure of cutting it my self that way I know it is a perfect cut.

I bought the retro style radio and really haven't regretted it at all, the only that sucks is not having a cd player, but you can use a MP3 player. I put kenwood 6x9's under the seat and bought kick panels with kenwood 6.5's in them and ran an amp to all 4 speakers. It sounds better than any aftermarket radio I have had and looks stock. I have been through all the aftermarket stuff with competetions and putting radios in other people's truck.
I wouldn't cut the dash especially with all the other options. However I do want to relocate the the gas tank to make more room for speakers.

You can run subs off of the knob style radios to. Its not a problem at all and should sound ok. I am just not sure about adjusting sound thru the radio. I know most amps have adjustments though.
If you have the room, I think some of the consoles that people ar building look good, but the ones the aren't that great really look bad.

I just bought a patch panel to repair what someone hacked out of the dash (before I bought it) to stuff a contemporary radio. I also just bought an original 1972 AM radio to resto and modify. I'll be doing a Frankenstein cross between what FizzleFry did and my own creation. I don't use the radio, tape deck, CD, whatever, just my iPhone. I'm making a custom insert for the ashtray (since I quit 4 yrs ago YAY) that holds a universal dock with a back support for the iPhone and jacks into the contemporary unit behind the dash. The left knob will control the volume on the new unit and will look stock, and the radio will appear stock to those walking by (AM Only).

X2 on the underdash. That's what I did. I placed it just below the key and it is easy to reach and not easy to see from the outside.

I'm going to be putting a 7" in my dash here soon. I'm going to cut out the entire recessed part and weld in a new piece that's flush. Then I'm going to put my 7" in there. I'm thinking about cutting out the ash tray as well but haven't decided for sure. I'm sure I'll have pics up in a month or so.

thats the radio i have and i love it because it does ipods and the only one i found thas plays subwoofers

it is only metal, you can cut it, and if you ever want to go back to stock, you can weld it back in....
