67 K 20 17inch split rims
On my 67 K20 I have 17 inch split rim wheels. I got the truck from my father in law. His dad bought it new in 67. They never changed a thing on it other than the steering box, which is a whole other question. Are these truly stock wheels, did they offer such a thing back then? I would like to keep them as they are kinda cool.

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
Are you sure they are 17"? I have the original split rims on my 1970 k20 and they are 16.5" Either way I would say they probably original.

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
Yeah I'm pretty sure. My father in law said they always had trouble finding 17" tires for it. I looked at the number on the tires, 7.5 - 17. Guess they are stock huh

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
Also, search around for info on split rims. You will find when you want to get new tires that only a few tire places will deal with them because of the dangers involved when seating the tires.

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
Truck tire places do split rims. You just need that cage to be safe.Yes,they did make larger rims in the `60s for 4wds.UPS ran Chevys and they ran the tall rims.

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
'67's have a lot of carry over parts from older models. and its possible they are factory. My '67 C-30 came factory with 17.5" 1 piece budd wheels, which are not real common. You can buy the reproduction 7.5 - 17 tires from the site below.

'67 Chevy, 1Ton w/17" split rims.
Please ignore the Ford wheels & hubcaps that the PO ran...but, he did save the originals. Pretty cool with those little "dog dish" hubcaps. |

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
Yes, The 17" split rim wheel was always an option on 3/4 and 1 ton pickups up untill 1968.The 17" 3 piece could handle more weight than the 16" 2 piece and the 17.5" one piece wheels.Truck tire shops only for working on them. This country was built with split rim trucks hauling millions of miles long before the tubeless rims came on to the scene. Many construction trucks and trailers still use them today. In the sixties, the GM 15" 3 piece (1960-1965) was recalled because they broke when overloaded. The solution was to replace them with 15" 2 piece rims. The other designs were safe if properly installed by trained personnel.

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
The military still uses them, as long as they are in a cage when aired up they are fine. The reason they were called suicide rims was because people would not get the rims seated properly and would sit on the rim while airing it up. the inner rim would blow off sending the person sitting on the tire up into the air and into peril

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
As mentioned, there are two types with the later design being more safe.I had a tough little truck in CA.A `55 2nd 8-lug shortbed with 15" split rims.On unpaved roads hauling loads the clincher style become the "split" rim and the split rims hold up.As the roads became mostly paved the split rims became less popular, not so much about safety.I never really heard about them being so unsafe until they stopped beind offered on new trucks.Maybe once radials started being used on trucks had something to do about it.Although,UPS trucks running these rims were some of the first trucks I know of that started using radials (Michelins, the first radial). My dad bought 16" Michelins for our Land Rover in`69.That was the early days of radials.

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
There were many wheel options from 1960 to 1968 for 3/4 and 1 tons. The 19.5" one piece wheel would be a great choice on low geared trucks. This 19.5 wheel and tire combo is 33" tall and has a period correct tubeless Michlin X radial. It allows you to keep the small dog dish hubcaps, and run a modern tubeless radial.Tire shops will now love you.

I have a 72 custom camper truck with 17" rims on it. I will have to check the tag and see if it says anything about them.

Re: 67 K 20 17inch split rims
The front wheels are off an old international 3/4 pickup. Had to have something to drive it back from Montana on. Back ones are the splits and two more by the garage.
