Transmission shifter linkage questions

Thanks to everyone here I got my transmission sorted out. Now I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong on the linkage. I have an aftermarket steering column with a column shifter and the transmission is a TH350. I have installed the factory style shifter linkage but have been unable to get the column indicator to match the transmission position. When I installed the linkage I put the column sifter in Park and the transmission in Park and locked down the adjustable rod. But when I move it out of park none of the transmission stops/detents match the column indicators. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong? Should I scrap the factory type and use Lokar cable or rod type shifter linkage?
