Hello everybody, I have a 1962 short wide with a swapped front k-member out of a 78 c10, and a mildly built 355. I have a set of long tube headers for 73-87 trucks. But they do not fit very well and was wondering what everyone else was using. I had heard longtubes off 1st gen camaros worked. Thanks for any input.

The Hedman #69260's are the headers designed to fit these trucks. If you are still running a manual trans, you have to be careful using car headers as they will typically hit the bellhousing crossmember.

Those were actually the first set of headers i tried, and they didnt even come close to fitting, because of the late-model front crossmember, and now iv got a set for 73-87 that still have some minor clearence issues

It sounds like maybe you have moved the engine forward from the original location? The '73-'87 suspension crossmember isn't any bigger than an original '63-'66 crossmember. Either one of those headers will fit a '60-'66 with the engine in the original location.

I put in shorty headers for a81 camaro. They fit perfect. I have a 61 chevy. sb 400 auto. And i swaped the front end out for an 80 chevy. Got them off amazon for $150 ceramic coated.

One point that some discover if they are going to bag or slam their trucks is the long tube headers making contact with the ground beware...Vernski

Captain pointed me in the direction of Hedman 68600. They fit great except for a very slight clearance to the drivers side engine mount. They don't hang below the frame rails either so they will work if your going really low. 66 c10 swb with 89 suburban crossmember, sbc 350 and 700r4.

I did quite a bit of research when it came to headers for my '64; I, too, have a mildly built 355. I found a study that showed long tube headers compared to the Dorman 2.5" outlet Rams Horn style manifolds and the results were pretty close. If you're looking for good performance and something that isn't going to turn your cab into an oven, I would consider the Rams Horn. You can get a set at Speedway for about $115. Here's a link:

They also make the manifold with a 45 degree kickback if you don't have a straight shot. I'm not sure what the clearance is like on your truck with that crossmember, but all I had to do on mine (with stock crossmember) was move the engine mounts to the rear mounting position.

If you do decide to go with the Rams Horn style, let me know and I'll get you a part number for the downpipe and donuts. I just picked up the downpipes and donuts this past weekend.

Please post the part numbers for the down pipes and donuts. I have the same situation with a '63 GMC with a 355SBC. The rams horn manifolds that I have are 2 1/2" outlets and straight down. They appear to be the same that I had on a '62 Impala with a 300 horse 327. By the way the bell housing crossmember has been removed from my GMC.

You can find both at any local reputable auto parts store, I just found a link to Summit for both when I Googled.

I was told these Dorman Rams Horn manifolds were originally designed for use on circle track cars. I do know some cars are only allowed to use parts that appear to be stock, so I guess there could be some truth to it.

Thanks 64C10Fleet! That looks just like what I need. These manifolds are machined to take a special formed donut gasket. I hope that the Jones pipe flange is made the same way. I've had that type of gasket made of a composition material and also of soft steel. There is a circle track just a few miles away and I've heard that some of those guys use these Corvette type manifolds. So it looks like it will soon be time to build another exhaust system. I probably don't need a photograph but maybe it would help someone else.

Yeah, couldn't find a downpipe in 2.5" that would fit the donut supplied with the manifolds. The pipe I posted is flat, and the donut I posted is flat on one side and beveled on the other.

64C10Fleet, That setup should work OK using the downpipe and donut that you posted. The manifolds that I have both have a narrow machined flat ring near the edge but not wide enough to provide a good gasket seal.

Update! Just got home from a local swapmeet where i scored a set of Hedman longtubes designed for 67-91 C10,s Part number 69088. Mocked them up to my engine and they fit like a glove! I am still going to make a little notch in my frame for the number 3 tube on each side as there is only about an 1/8" of clearance but other than that I will not have to do anything else!
