Re: 15 inch 3/4 ton wheels?

My 61 3/4 has 19.5 wheels, 3 piece, I believe. I haven't seen any others like 'em-I thought they were all 15 or 16 inch.

Re: 15 inch 3/4 ton wheels?

I am running 15" on my 4 x 4. 8 stud. I had to use a 1/4" spacer on thr frts to clear the calipers.
when I 1st got my truck there were 36x15x15 on it 6 stud and when I bought new tires 33x12 1/2 x15 I still had 6 stud so when I went for larger axles I just changed the rims , ( i just went to the tire shop and bought them), I will be going to 16" soon as when I get new tires again I will be going skinnier

Re: 15 inch 3/4 ton wheels?

It is common to have caliper clearence issues with 15 inch wheels in a 8 lug application. If I had a choice I would go with 16 or 17 inch wheels. The 16.5's are OK for normal use, but I've heard that they are slowly phasing out that size of tire.

weeellll... its not exactly for a truck aplication... I am in the dreaming/procurment stage of building a street legal, vintage stock car...
I have located a 62 chev 3/4 ton detroit locker, and I am thinking of using the whole setup, trailing arms coils and all. the fronts will probably be regular 5 lug 15 drum or disc.

Re: 15 inch 3/4 ton wheels?

Yes, 60 thru 65 3/4 tons used the optional 8 lug 3 piece 15" split rim from the factory. In mid 65 it was dropped for the new 2 piece 16" split rim. In, 1969 the 3 piece 15" was recalled, and GM replaced them with 15" 2 piece rims. All 15" GM 8 lug rims were split rims, never had 1 peice 15 rims. All 16" 8 lug GM wheels were 2 piece split rims up to 1973. In 1974, the new 16" one piece 8 lug wheel first became an option.Don't know all the aftermarket scene, but I am sure there where 8 lug 15" white spoke wheels made.

Re: 15 inch 3/4 ton wheels?

both of those optinons sound workable...
I will have to see if I can find the white spoke in a 10, or 12wide, or the split might work, becaue all I really need is the center to weld onto a wider hoop.

the 3 piecesplit? does that mean that there is a center, and splits on each side, and then the 2 is 1/2 a wheel, and the other sideis the split?

I believe you can get 15" 8 hole wheels all the way up to 14" wide. A lot of offroad guys use 15" wheels......I personally don't understand why but they do.

Re: 15 inch 3/4 ton wheels?

The 15" 8 lug pre 66 and the 17" 8 lug pre 69 were 3 piece split rims, wheel plus 2 piece ring on outer side. The only one recalled was the 15" because Chevy made the mistake of putting a 15 tire on a 3/4 ton truck. People overloaded these trucks and tires and wheels blew. The simple solution would be to order a larger 17" rim with a higher capacity 17" truck tire. Many salesman were at fault for not asking or knowing what people were doing with their trucks. Split rims are a common sight on heavy duty local trucks still today. They are not illegal in California. Most all heavy duty split rims are the 2 piece design from the late 60's and 70's.Sure they need a more expierenced person to correctly asseble them, but America was built with split rim trucks, and was a very common site on heavy duty trucks up to the mid 70's. I am not pushing split rims, since the tubeless tire and 1 piece rim is more pratical and economical in todays world. But, a split rim with bais truck tire always has a tougher look.

Re: 15 inch 3/4 ton wheels?

According to my GM parts book there was a 17.5" x 5.25" single piece tubeless tire rim option 8 lug. There was also a 6 lug version C,K and P model available, I'm looking for the 6 lug.

The split rims are legal but a lotta shops are not doing them because of insurance problems,At least I have been told that by a couple of tire shops around KC

The 17.5" 1 piece wheel ( 8 lug ) was the standard wheel on 3/4 tons and was common. The 17.5" 1 piece wheel ( 6 lug ) was an optional wheel on 1/2 tons and very uncommon. The 6 lug version was a very low production wheel and the best chance of finding them would be on a original government owned 4x4.
