A/C removal by novice...Am I missing anything? - The 1947 - Present Chevrolet & GMC Truck Message Board Network

I'm giving the yank to the A/C and want to know if I am going to cause myself any trouble. I have the the silver canister and A/C aluminum cooler?condenser?, (hell if I know what it is called!)and am on my way inside the hood. Looks scary! Will this affect the heater at all? Help me if you can! Thanks guys.

My first question is why are you pulling it all out? From the A/C side of the house. They condenser is the heat exchanger on the radiator core support front side. You can pull all the liquid side stuff off. Compressor, condenser, and hoses. I would leave the evap which is the big funny looking box on the firewall because the blower uses that big box to provide air to the inside of the cab. As for wiring make sure you don't leave any exposed ends that can short out on so metal. Good luck.

Compressor I believe is shot, a metal plate on the compressor behind the belt pulley is free wheelin'. Basically just assume there is no reason to try and get it running. Never had any luck getting an AC up and going in and old vehicle, always had bunch of leaks or other fun stuff. What's a new compressor cost?

If the system hasn't been open and it is just a compressor issue you could probably fix it but it might get costly. The compressor is not the major expense the shop that is certified to do the work is the expense. I got the Old Air unit because that way it is designed to run R-134A which I can buy over the counter. That way I can do my A/C work. I could get the certificate to buy R-12 but it still runs like $30 a can and R-134A is $5-6 a can or a 30# can for $129.

i remember when r-12 was 1.99 a can in the mid 80's

i bought some before the law changed and stashed it for those original cars i might buy in the future that i dont want to mess up.

I remember when freon was 59 cents a can.

I didn't buy up any of it for future storage though. I do have the license to buy it, but the cost forces me to use 134a everytime.

I have a case (12 cans?) stashed. Are you telling me that could be worth 360?!!! I bought it when it was around 99 cents a can. Damn! I should have bought several hundred cases!
